Sometimes it pays to look
« on: February 09, 2016, 02:26:23 PM »
So a few months ago had a bad day at work.  Job typically isn't bad, but I've been pretty meh about it for the last year or so.  Looking to FIRE in approx. 7 years and figured I could just grind it out.  Anyway went online to look at a job website and found one where I met all of their requirements, and decided to throw my resume at them.

So fast forward a few months they offer me the job $40,000 more than I'm making now in a LCOL area with better overall weather than were I'm living.  DW has a very good chance of working remotely so she will be working from home and the place we found to live I can walk to my office so we are going from two cars down to one, and may shave a year off of the FIRE  All in all things are working out.  So for any of you out there that are having a bad day sometimes it pays to look :)

Unless you were making 200k+ before, I would think that a 40k bump would shave more than 1 year off?

Congrats though! I agree that looking around once every 2-3 years can be extremely lucrative. Sitting in one job for more than 5 years, is basically throwing money away in most cases...

life is short

That was my first thought as well, but either way, congratulations! That's awesome!

We got a bit of a late start, and are somewhat risk adverse so we've set our FIRE number probably a bit higher than we need too, but I want to make sure we have plenty especially for things like healthcare costs when we are older.

Looking never hurts. I've been with my company almost ten years, but sometimes I go out and interview. If something turns up, great. If not, it gives me perspective. And practice for when I need it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
