Sold a car; spent the money on a bike
« on: September 14, 2015, 01:05:05 PM »
Yeah, I sold my Lexus this week and spent nearly all of the sale proceeds on a bicycle.  The pedal kind.

Now, said Lexus was a 1994 I've owned for more than a decade, it was hit in a parking lot last year and I made nearly $3k from insurance on that, and it sold for $900.  I travel quite a bit and I have been wanting a versatile travel bike for a while now; a bike that can do fast road rides yet have room for cyclocross tires and be sturdy enough for some off-roading.

I bought a Surly Straggler frame; it's basically a disc brake "all rounder" bike that can take fat or skinny tires, has provisions for fenders and racks, and it's steel so I can send it off to Bilenky and get S&S couplers installed for airline travel.  I have a titanium S&S coupled frame now; it's been all over the world but doesn't have enough room for fat tires or provisions for disc brakes.  It'll go up for sale when I'm satisfied the Surly will do the job; that should make the whole deal a wash.

I'm excited about the new bike but there's nobody to tell here at work..  so you all get to hear about it.   :-)

We're happy for you that you are excited.  Now, if I had only understood any of that bike tech stuff you presented...  :D

You've been around this forum a while.. you should be picking it up.  :-)

I rode a 400 mile tour (the DALMAC tour) up through Michigan to the Canadian border last week on the travel bike.  There were scores of people in their 60s and a few in their 70s making the ride.  The founder of the ride, former MI State Representative Dick Allen, rode parts of the tour this year.  He is 82.  I hope to be like these guys and keep riding until they put me in a box!

Sounds awesome. The Straggler looks like a very versatile bike. Just remember when you're heading around the world to pack some extra brake pads, disc pads can apparently be hard to find in some areas. Even w/o selling the Ti bike, this seems pretty reasonable to me; trading the Lexus for a Straggler. Selling the Ti bike, though makes this an extraordinary deal.

That's a good tip!  In honor of the just-finished Vuelta Espana, here's a pic of the current S&S coupled bike at the top of La Morcuera, one of the Cat 1 climbs from Saturday's Vuelta stage.  :-)

The Straggler is a really nice do-it-all bike, enjoy!
