Smithsonian tickets?
« on: June 02, 2021, 12:52:21 PM »
Has anyone been successful getting tickets to any of the Smithsonians? And if so, do you know how early in the day the tickets are released? (Midnight, morning, etc. of the 30th day in advance.)

I just tried the National Portrait Gallery and they have lots of tickets for July 1-3. American History and African-American museums were sold out. American Indian has lots of days available.

On a related note, the Phillips Collection is now open Tuesday-Sunday. But it's not free like the Smithsonians.

National Museum of the American Indian has the best food on the Mall.

Thanks all! The answer is midnight of the 30th day before.

Tickets are free but very limited and timed-entry. So in order to get 11:00 tickets for American History on July 3, I ordered them this morning at 12:01. There are no tickets left for any time that day. I was able to get zoo tickets more easily.

It appears that all of the food venues at all of the Smithsonian are still closed.

Underrated are the Renwick, Postal Museum, and Udvar-Hazy.  Hirshhorn is also great but I find it's more hit-or-miss based on the active exhibit.  A few years ago I made a point not to miss Yayoi Kusama (see attached pic for what one of the little rooms was like).

Renwick is a small art gallery located immediately NW of the White House.  The Postal Museum is over by Union Station.  Hirshhorn is on the south side of the mall.  Udvar-Hazy houses all the larger aircraft out in Chantilly near Dulles (IAD).

Pre-pandemic you still needed tickets for the African American and could be difficult at times.  They're all worth it so keep trying!

DC holds a special place in my heart. We sadly had to cancel a trip back in 2020 due to the pandemic. I was lucky enough to tag along on a 10 week work assignment DH had several years ago. We spent so much time walking the mall and visiting the Smithsonian museums. A hotel employee told us about Udvar-Hazy and it is worth the drive for sure. I mean it’s not everyday you can walk right up to one of the space shuttles.

I used to work at 1701 Penn so I could pop over to the Renwick all the time. I'll be in DC for a month and hope to get to Udvar-Hazy, but our guests for the 4th will only be in town 48 hours. It's their first visit to DC.

So much history, so much to do and see! I hope you are able to reschedule your cancelled trip.
