Self-insuring - Are you doing this (or considered it)?
« on: January 28, 2018, 01:48:03 PM »
In lieu of paying premiums for various types of insurance, I'm curious to hear thoughts or experiences about self-insuring for home, medical, etc, whether you are currently doing this or considering it.

I'm the OP of this thread https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/welcome-to-the-forum/self-insured-specifically-health-insurance/msg1258336/#msg1258336

TL;DR,, the impression I got was the consensus was F$&& NO and how could you even think about it.
Lots of anectdotes of high cost horror stories.

of course that thread was _before_ the latest changes to heathcare insurance.

My DH and I will be self insuring our health when we leave the United States.  I don't think it is a very smart option while in the United States because you need to have several millions of dollars.

We self insure the contents of our house regarding flooding but our homeowner's insurance include contents.  For many years we self insured ourselves as renters.
