Sabbaticals/Extended Vacations
« on: July 03, 2017, 02:39:43 PM »
My wife and I were talking the other night...I'm not sure if we ever will cut and move to another country, but we do enjoy experiencing other cultures. My family is from Sweden (well, most recent immigrants...my great-great grandfather came from near Stockholm), and we have spent some time there for both work and pleasure. I've learned some Swedish (more than rudimentary, less than proficient, but still learning). Have any mustachians ever taken a mid-career extended trip overseas to immerse themselves in another culture? Wife and I are 32, we have a 6, 3, and almost newborn. We think it is valuable to expose ourselves (and kids) to areas outside of where we're from. So we got to thinking...one possibility is a work exchange program (we do that occasionally at work...have had people go to Australia, Sweden, France most recently), but that is relatively competitive and you never know when one might pop up.

So, I'm sure somebody has done something like this. Timeframe wise, we were thinking something like 5 years down the road. That would get all the kids old enough to really remember any experience. Also would give me time to build up vacation. Thinking something like 8-10 weeks (2-3 months). Right now, we'd go for Sweden (I know, it's expensive) b/c of our connections and past visits. But anyway....thoughts? Experiences? Of course, I'm not positive I could get off work for 2-3 months. But we'd see (I'm a civil servant with the DoD...if any other fed employees, DoD specifically, have tried this, please chime in).

Somebody started a similar thread just the other day.  Might find what you are looking for there.
