Retiring in Spain
« on: July 20, 2020, 11:54:10 AM »
Hello Mustachians,

It has been some time since I've been here and I apologize for that. Our moustachian journey is proceeding in steady speed and we can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel and questions that were not so urgent at the time we started are now making my head spin.
Most likely we will both achieve FIRE in the next 5 years and the plan is to return to my wife's home country of Spain.
I'm a citizen of the neighboring country of Portugal, where I have some money resulting from selling an apartment I had there. Since we are currently living in the US, I have found it a bit tricky to decide what to do with that money until we stop working here.
One thing is sure: whatever happens to that money, it will end up as down payment for a house in Spain, of about 30-35% of the total cost.
The safest bet seems to be keeping the money in a savings account in Portugal. Unfortunately the personal investment business in Portugal is not so developed as here in the States.
Transfer that money to the US and invest it, will result in unwanted bank commissions. And then, I have to transfer it again to Spain, when we decide to buy a house.
Because I do not currently reside in Spain, I cannot open a bank account there and again, I don't think that investing in Spain is the right thing to do right now.
This is a complicated situation and I was wondering if anyone here has experienced something similar and can give me some hints on possible paths forward.
I will look forward for your comments.
