Replacement Car
« on: December 31, 2019, 05:21:05 PM »
My Honda Fit is wonderful, but my kids are growing and its getting pretty cramped for them (we're a tall family).  I'm considering the Odyssey or the CRV, but I'm open to other hatchback options.  I know the CRV is just less space on an Odyssey wheelbase, but the Odyssey is also more expensive and there are less options in my area.  Are there other cars I should consider?

Also, while I'm super-optimistic about EV cars, I'm in a rural area with limited charging and long distances between towns so I have to pass on options like the Leaf.

Consider a Prius v (the wagon version of the Prius) - very roomy, super reliable and very economical. I have had mine for 8 years and still love it for its utility.

Have a look at the Toyota Venza, if you're going with used cars.

If you want an SUV look at the CRV or HRV.

The CRV is on the Civic platform. The HRV is on the Fit platform. The Passport / Pilot / Ridgeline / MDX are on the Odyssey platform.

We've had a CRV for two decades now. There was another newer CRV in the family for a while and it was reliable the entire time.

Our CRV is the smaller first gen CRV and it is still a good size despite our two teenagers.

Perhaps not the vehicle I'd go on a coast to coast trip with all four of us due to the size and high RPMs on the interstate. The newest CRV is much more refined for the interstate.

Our older CRV is great for lower speeds though. The HRV is probably a similar size inside as the 1st gen CRV and the HRV might be more refined as well. I expect the HRV is bigger on the inside than a Fit.

Side benefit, alst time I looked you could still get a manual transmission in a 2WD HRV. Typically speaking the Honda SUVs have a 1 MPG penalty for AWD. Maintenance is low and we had no AWD problems over 300K miles. The front to back driveshaft U-joints did wear out but they aren't expensive or complicated to replace.

LOTS of unloved (unfashionable) sedans out there to choose from. Our other car is one such domestic sedan. Cheap to buy, cheap to maintain and better on fuel than our SUV. Not as "cool" but whatever.

I would recommend the Minivan. Consider expanding other brands as well. You may find some at better prices.

Minivans are great touring vehicles too.
