Renting out your backyard

I saw this and had to share.. http://tinyhouselistings.com/tiny-house-parking/index.php?s=viewmore

If you have some land, rent it out to a person with a tiny house!

How awesome would it be to go on AirBnB with a backyard tiny house and rent that out instead of your spare bedroom? I would 100% rent somebody's tiny house in their backyard on a trip.

Interesting idea, thanks for posting.  I've been fascinated by the tiny house movement ever since I read an article in Nexus last year.  It's cool to see how people are using limited space so efficiently. Also forces you to simplify and choose what is really important.

That is a cool idea.  My wife really wants to build a guest house but I am worried about the cost, and if it will actually get much use.  I don't want to put $30k in to a little house that will be used 1 or 2 weeks a year by guests.

Interesting. A friend of mine recently bought an RV. I was initially thinking it was a foolish purchase (what an expensive toy!), but then she mentioned that she's thinking she'll rent it out on Airbnb when she's not using it. She'll keep it parked at her house when she's not using it, and people would be able to stay in the RV and use its facilities, and not have to ever enter her house (but she'd be home to keep an eye on it and make sure the renters aren't trashing it). I thought that was a pretty clever idea and a way she'll be able to recoup the cost of buying it. We live in a city that is a prime tourist destination so I have no doubt she'll be able to rent it out as a low-cost option for young folks visiting the city.

A lot of the tiny houses are actually pretty inexpensive, especially if you are willing to do some work yourself and put in some amenities:

But if you do want to have a guest house, renting it out when it's not used is a great way to make a luxury pay for itself. :)

This is brilliant, any other ideas on what people would want to rent a large fairly private back yard for?  I posted it on craigslist a month or so ago with not success.

How about gardeners who might want to plant an orchard?

I know a couple who owns a mobile home park, and they make LOADS of money from that place.  I think they allow people to bring their own trailers, and they also buy up repo trailers and rent them as a package deal.  You can buy a basic trailer for "take up payments".  It causes them some headaches, of course.  I mean, you don't get wonderful tenants for the location /prices of their place, but they're making money hand over fist.

If you live in a suburb, of course, this probably isn't possible:  If you're in a suburb, you're probably zoned for single family dwellings only.

This is working pretty well for me.  Of course, it's farmland, not an orchard, but it brings in a decent amount of money each year.  There is some work involved:  You must be registered with the county, have a Farm ID#, and jump through some hoops each year.

Yeah! I saw this!  I would love it if the zoning on my rental changed and I could add a "tiny house" in my backyard!  That would be so great!
