Recommendation for resource for "FIRN" - retire now
« on: February 15, 2018, 11:57:11 AM »
I love this site and the community, but my demographic sometimes does not mesh perfectly with the majority on here who are looking  to be FIRE. I wish I had found this place years ago. Anyway, are you aware of a site/forum similar to this addressing folks retiring now? My timeframe is ~3-4 years, I am 62 y/o, so do not have the benefit of a long time horizon for accumulation or to withstand a major correction/downturn.  I tried Reddit but not much help there. Any insights are appreciated.

Are you saying you have few assets and are wanting to retire soon, but at normal retirement age? If so, I think this (and other early retirement forums like those on reddit) are the place for you. Most other forums discussing retirement are actually going to have longer time horizons since the assumption is that you're starting younger. Just like an early retiree, you need to save a lot fast.

If you're looking for what it's like to be retired there's the post FIRE section up top.

If there's something else you're looking for (social security, medicare, etc) that we don't usually deal with because of our age the Bogleheads forum might be a good match.

Hi and thanks. Yes and no. I have done a good job saving for retirement, I think, I just got a late start. I have enough assets I feel, to retire in  a couple of years. I agree, lots of the discussions here definitely apply to me. It's stuff like "well I was going to retire at age 40 or 50 and now with the market downturn  I will just put that off 5 years." Not a horrible situation for a younger man or woman, but for those close to traditional retirement not a viable option.
Thanks for the bogleheads recommendation, I hadn't thought of that.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
