Ready for summer
« on: May 19, 2014, 08:19:31 PM »
Just did a tune up on both the bikes. My mountain bike has seen some shit but it's still riding good. Over the years I've had three new sets of rims and tires, changed shift grips to finger shift and a change of gears and brakes. I bought it in 1993 but it still rides like a champ. I think the rear frame might be a bit out of line but it's all good. Ready to put more miles on them. Looking for some panniers that can be switched from either bike. Is that possible??

Well, most panniers can clip onto the side of a standard rear bike rack. So I would get a standard rear rack like this first:

http://www.amazon.com/Ventura-Universal-Bicycle-Carrier-Rack/dp/B001NGF6AY/ref=sr_1_1/190-7953982-2156839?s=cycling&ie=UTF8&qid=1400553166&sr=1-1

Then start thinking about panniers.

How do these attach? Do I need to bolt into the frame or do they attach with pre-existing holes? Do I need to buy something that matches each bike?

Depends on the bike and rack. I've never personally done it, but a youtube search has lots of hits:

etc.

I would bring each bike into a bike shop and just ask them if you'll be able to put a rear rack on them. They are usually willing to dispense with advice. They might even be able to point out which racks they have that would fit well.

Doesn't look like either of your bikes has standard rack mounts. Attaching a rack is still possible, but you'll probably want to go into a bike shop and have them explain the options to you.
