Question RE Valentine's Day gifts
« on: January 18, 2017, 11:18:40 AM »
So where do Mustacians buy lingerie, pajamas and undies for Valentine's Day?

I want to buy my wife some things but the only place I really know about is Victoria's Secret.  I feel like their stuff is overpriced, no value, paying for namebrand.  I want to get nice things, good materials, good construction and style but at a good value. My wife keeps saying her undies are old, her pajamas make her feel like just a Mom.  I want to find her some things that make her feel sexy in a non-trashy way.

I've been wondering the same thing! Because I am newly separated, and actually hate wired, overly padded bras, which is what is 90% of what VS sells. If you think VS is overpriced, then I'm not sure what to say. Good underwear is gulp expensive. Mustachians please correct me if you know of a good place for beautiful underthings that are reasonable.
Here is an article I saw.

Try Soma--I got some pajamas as a wedding gift (I asked for PJ's instead of lingerie for shower gifts!) and love them.  I still buy their underwear pretty much exclusively (on clearance with a coupon, of course!), and love it.  It's well made, fits well, and is super-comfy.

I just looked at their website--looks like they have some subtly sexy stuff that might fit the bill.

Depends on what you're looking for. Sexy, worn for 15 min, appearance is more important than durability? Then go for Frederick's of Hollywood (online clearance section). However, if we're talking foundational garments, like partygypsy says, they can be very expensive- VS still sucks though on that front. Usually do fittings at nordstroms, then buy online somewhere like Brastop.

i agree with others here: the good stuff is expensive :)

i mitigate that by going to nordstrom, which has a pretty great selection, and also a few local stores here (check yelp for good stores in your area). i'll browse the goods, sometimes try stuff on, and then head to the internet to look for the best deal on the particular item i want. amazon has a surprisingly good selection if you know what you're looking for.

what i consider a good price for a good piece would probably come out similar to the price of a VS garment... but the quality and longevity (and i think aesthetics) will be much, much, MUCH better.

Try "adore me" it is a website that seems to have some really cute stuff - haven't tried them, so I don't know about their quality, but they seem to be cheap and geared primarily to the cute, young things:)

I agree, the good stuff is expensive. Unless it is on sale and I can try it on, I don't buy it. I tend to buy my unmentionables when I'm on vacation visiting family and friends in Europe - dirt cheap in comparison, unless you insist on top french design ...
Not originally something that I would have considered bringing back as a souvenir, you understand:), but it has saved me a good deal of money and I enjoy having a nice, big selection of fancy, lacy bras that actually fit well and wash well, not to mention they do look sexy.

My DIL did something similar on vacation in NYC, visiting an outlet that specialized in fancy underthings. I bet right now is not a good time to purchase with Valentines Day on the horizon - a Visa card to be used after V-day, presented with a red rose might be a better idea.

So funny! Back in college when I was in France, that's what I wanted to bring home as a souvenir, some beautiful lace underwear and bras, silk and lace camisole.  I tried on, but didn't buy  : ( I couldn't justify the cost. A little regret there.

Hmmm... my husband just bought me a nightgown from LLBean's for Christmas, which I love.  But I'm guessing you're not looking for ankle-length flannel ;-)

I will have to give VS some love and say that when it comes to everyday, cotton panties, they can't be beat. The price has gone up a bit over the years and the quality is a bit lower than it was a decade ago, but I swear they still last practically forever. And they have plenty of cute designs/colors/patterns :) (But their pjs are over priced and please for the love of god don't buy their bras!)

For bras I second everyone else in recommending Nordstrom (although I've found Dillards nice too if there's no Nordstrom around). Very helpful, knowledgeable sales people and a good selection in terms of sizes and quality brands.

That's so weird - when I went to France in highschool the girls did this too - bought underwear. I didn't quite understand it.

I think it's like most other purchases.  It's not the underwear you're buying, it's the French sexiness/mystique/whatever.

To OP, I get cute/comfy/durable cotton panties from Target and when I have a reason to get sexy stuff, I get it from Kohl's usually.  (I don't know if they're local for you.)  It has held up well (not that it's usually on very long ;) and I hand or delicate wash).  I usually get pajamas from Kohl's too and it's held up to regular wear and still looks nice.  Don't feel like a mom in any of it.

Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and similar stores all have cheap lingerie. The quality varies but you can find some nice things if you're willing to hit up a few stores and hunt through the racks.

Sexy lingerie and daily underwear are two distinctly different categories in my mind. Sexy stuff is generally uncomfortable and not made for wearing long. IMO, not worth spending a ton of money on for high quality because durability isn't much for a concern. This category is more about looks than wearability.  A PP mentioned clearance on Frederick 's of Hollywood and I would agree, or even Target and such carry "sexy" stuff leading up to Valentine's Day. Comfortable sleepwear would depend on the wearer's preference.  There are pretty comfortable sleepwear choices at Kohls and other department stores. Typically things like thongs, underwires, push up tops, spaghetti straps do not make for comfortable sleep clothing. Think cottony material, nothing tight. For daily use excellent bras are available at Nordstrom and it is worth spending the money on quality I order to get comfortable durable well fitting items. I would not think it possible to purchase a bra for daily wear for someone else as they must be tried on to insure proper fit. Undies depend on users prefernece and there are cute cotton options at target and kohls and similar stores,  as well as sexier silky options there or st Nordstrom.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
