Problems with Ting?
« on: May 02, 2015, 09:38:08 AM »
I finally decided to go with Ting, so I bought their Moto G. However, when I activated it, it activated on the Boost network. I've googled the hell out of this and can't find any explanation, and so far Ting's customer service has been abysmal (but they are very nice, I'll give them that). Has anybody ever even heard of this? The Moto G was refurbished and apparently it used to be a Boost phone (there's some crap app on there that is from Boost). I was so excited, and now I'm just pissed off.  I thought asking a bunch of engineers might get me some answers faster than I'll get them from Ting.

If you bought this phone directly from Ting, then return it for a different one - obviously this one is proprietary to Boost.

If you bought the device from a third party and they mis-labelled it as a Sprint or Ting phone - no dice. Return it if you can.

Apparently there used to be a way to bring a Boost MotoG to Ting, but that is no longer the case.

Note that you used to be able to bring a Boost Moto G to Ting, but something changed:

Don't google, just chat or call them.  If they can't fix it, ask to exchange the phone.  Easy as pie.

Are you sure it is actually on that network?  My phone still says sprint, but it is on the Ting network.  We have had Ting for about a year and have not had any trouble.  We have four phones on it and one of the four I had a hard time getting it set up but finally did and haven't had any trouble since.

When I finally got through to them, that's what we decided the case seems to be. Apparently with the refurbished Moto Gs that were used by another provider before Ting bought them, there are some problems like this--in terms of what it looks like the phone is doing (using the wrong network). I'm going to chill out for a few days and see if I have any problems. My usage is showing up on the Ting website, so I guess I'm on the right network. Saving money is a pain in the ass sometimes. But at least their customer service folks are really nice.

My Ting phone loads up with the Sprint logo because it was originally a Sprint phone.  Your formerly Boost Mobile phone is likely just doing the same thing.  I'm pretty sure there are not (yet) any phones made specifically for Ting, so pretty sure this is the standard experience.  Boost is another Sprint MVNO (was originally Nextel's MVNO), works on the same towers, so everything should work the same as if it booted up with a Ting or Sprint logo.  As you've seen, Ting has very friendly and helpful customer service should something not work properly, but if your activity is showing up on their site looks like everything is working just fine.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
