I'm performing early stage due diligence on possible job opportunity in North Burnet, TX (Austin).  Any suggestions for areas/neighborhoods in which to rent.  Thanks in advance for your help!

If you are looking for cheap, the Rundberg area will do you (but it is a high-crime-for-Austin area).

What amenities are you looking for? Do you want an apartment or a house?

If looking at IBM, be warned they do massive layoffs frequently.

Homeaway? :D?

If you stay away from needing to use the major highways, you should be fine. People were complaining about traffic in Austin, and I was all 'lol babies' for a long time because I never drove anywhere. Then I started driving a bit more, and realized that it was actually a little awful (relative to how it used to be).

I know a lot of grad students get apartments in the Far West area, but that might be a bit far south, depending on how far North Burnet you are talking about.

I've also had friends in some of the complexes along Metric Blvd, and those seemed nice enough and Metric has bike lanes (at least on the south half). IDK about price, those friends were terrible with money.

I agree that your best bet is apartments in the Metric/Braker area east of Mopac. Prices are 1400-1500 for 3br (check Zillow) and expect a price hike yearly. You might be able to swing a duplex cheaper than an apartment.

Letired and Shusherstache:  thank you for the info.  I'll start by looking at those communities.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
