Post the entire history of your networth
« on: November 13, 2015, 06:21:55 PM »
Post the entire history of your networth (that you have tracked) however you like, whether you track it weekly, monthly, yearly or whatever as well as your current age, methods and goals.

My record (note I don't have a partner or someone I share my income with) starts off at the end of June 2012 a little after I had turned 18, completed a short 6 month Tafe course for work after graduating from highschool, got my first real job (casual back then but after a few months became full time and recently started my own business) and started saving for financial independence. Before the record starts I worked minimum wage jobs part time (e.g. mcdonalds) and spent everything I earned (without getting loans) on apple tech products. I like to track my networth weekly every sunday and round it down to the nearest cent with the goal of having a higher networth each week than I did the previous week. I used to get paid fortnightly and held off on spending anything until I got my next paycheck to prevent my networth going down on the week I didn't get paid. I've never been just given money before so all of this is through my own hands (work and investment returns). Here is the date and total networth columns from my massive spreadsheet (note there are many more columns):

Currently I'm 21 and plan to "retire" (get into creating free software/games/videos/music) at age 30. Since I was 18 I've been a true and dedicated mustachian. My goal at 30 is to have at the very least $1,000,000 Australian Dollars. My 162K networth at the moment is made up of the following:
$101,857 - Forex Accounts (this gives me high weekly profit returns averaging $780 per week (before tax) for the last 6 months but is extremely risky and not recommended)
$56,513 - Home Equity (The property is a 1 bedroom apartment in Sydney worth close to 600K (I keep property worth the same as the day I bought it))
$3,928 - "High Interest" Bank Account (A small amount of money sits in here to pay the bills that come up for my property/living expenses, the rest of my earnings go straight to paying off the loan)

Overall my goal is to pay off the loan by the time I am 25 (that's going to be a challenge). Then save up another deposit to buy an investment property at 26 and by the time I am 30 have that payed off. Once I "retire" at 30 I will continue to buy more properties for investment using my rent income. I never plan to sell properties and flip them for profit. I just want to build up a passive income that will eventually make the properties pay for themselves by the time I am 60.

Congratulations Jupiter!  That's some nice work on increasing networth!

I started my record keeping in 2004.  Before that I didn't pay a lot of attention to our savings, but I sure do now.  I get happy looking at the graph of the growth of our savings.  We are in our late 40's and we would have more if I had paid attention sooner!  Likely retire within 5 years.

These values are only cash/stock assets, they do not include house or vehicles or other possessions.

I record our values about once a month, but will only report annual amounts here to save space.  The graph shows the more frequent reporting.

An intriguing idea. Some caveats apply here:

- I haven't tracked NW weekly, only monthly;
- I only started tracking soon after I started the second mortgage;
- I don't count equity in the houses towards net worth, because houses in this area lose value year-on-year;
- Values are in GBP.

2007 -- $27,000     started tracking, age 30, after landing first "real" job

2008 -- $85,400     $50,000 one-time only gift from parents

2009 -- $125,575

2010 -- $158,064

2011 -- $184,992

2012 -- $181,549     disastrous first marriage, luckily brief

2013 -- $182,945     leave of absence to work in Ireland, WORTH IT

2014 -- $203,472

Aug 2015 -- $179,618  $20,000 elective medical procedure, WORTH IT

Today -- $195,223  Expect to be back at $200k by the end of the year.

The whole time, I was/am only working 6-7 months/yr.  I'm cool with being half-retired now, and fully retired at a more conventional age.  Current projections put me FI in my 40s and fully retired at 62.

Age 18, 2010: Had about $10k from washing dishes part time and small success with entrepreneurship online, went to college.

Worked summers during college, spent all my money on tuition and accrued about $5k debt per year on average.

Age 21, 2013: -20k  Graduated early, spent months looking for work.

Age 22, 2014: -7k.  Moved about 3 times. Got a better job.

Age 23, 2015: 20k  Promoted, finally got the job I wanted and a good living situation. Began 401k contributions, maxing them out immediately.

I'm hoping to be able to save about 55k / year from now on, potentially increasing with salary, and quit when I get to about $300k unless I really like my job at the time.

Graduated university in 2006, started working making $60k. I have been getting steady raises to ~$90k.

Wife started working in early 2010, making $40k, now up to $50k.

Got serious about FIRE in early 2013, we are now 30/31 and DINK. We net $115k after tax and save ~65%.

Doesn't no y-axis labels kind of defeat the purpose?

Indeed it is!  None of my screens are wide enough to display the whole width of the image, so they cut it off.  My bad, apologies all around.

Nice. Did you make this yourself or is it a copy/paste from some software/service you use?

MMM launched the blog in April 2011, so you couldn't have heard of him by then. ERE, yes. :)

networthiq.com is the oldest place I've been tracking my networth.  In 2012 I was diagnosed with cancer.  It was a bit of a shock, and it made me realize my plan to retire at 55 isn't guaranteed.  I decided to retire as soon as humanly possible, and also save enough to setup a trust for my special needs child.  MMM was very inspirational at this time as well...

I'm sorry to hear about the cancer. Your net worth just exploded starting in 2012! When are you on target to FIRE?

Suzanny,

That is an impressive graph!  It looks like you practically doubled your networth in about one year?  How did you accomplish that?

And I am so sorry about your cancer diagnosis.  I hope you are beating it.

Wow, thanks.  I didn't do anything special.  Sold a couple clown cars and started maxing out retirement accounts. Also paid off a mortgage on one of our rental properties.  $140,000 combined income, went from 15% savings rate to 40%. It was really sad seeing how much we spent on restaurants, even when we thought we were doing "good".

Good news is I've been cancer free for three years, so still a good chance for a long retirement.  ;-)  My current savings calculator says FIRE in 4.3 years. I'll be 47.

You mean if I had seen the light, I could have been MMM? I think that makes me feel worse, not better!

Don't feel bad; some of us had already seen the light, and still didn't become MMM.  I think he's pretty uniquely suited for that.  :)

Ah, so it seems that the growth is a bit overstated as the cars 'sale' shouldn't have boosted anything other than where the cash was tied up.

The left side of the graph was simply 'under-reported'

As for myself, I have my mint graph but it's entirely screwed up. It shows my net worth as unchanged from 2011 to 2014 and then jump up 200k over the past year.

Note to self, after paying off a loan, don't delete it out of mint....

What happened was that I removed all of my student loans from MINT after I paid them off, so mint simply thought I was spending $1,000s of dollars on candy bars (or whatever) instead of removing debt.

Instead of deleting the account, simply change its "Status" on the Accounts page from "Active" to "Closed". Then Mint will remember the account's history, but won't attempt to update it or show it in the main page accounts list going forward. :-)

BTT, here's mine. You should only need one guess to determine when I discovered MMM... :-)

Had a rough July-October, but it's trending up again!

Currently 29, single.  Track it bimonthly but only keep the quarterly results long-term.

I am proud of the younger people here that are making good progress in their early years.  I wish I was more focused in my 20's, early 30's.

NW since I started using Mint in 2010, shortly after getting my first real job after college. The large jumps aren't actually a large influx in money, but represent when I was finally able to get a couple different accounts to pull into Mint successfully.

April 2013: 862 dollars in savings, first part time job at 18

February 2015: 4k in savings, started my first full time job

November 2015: 17k in savings, 2.5k in 401k

After car payment is done with I am hoping to have these numbers grow dramatically

Most of us do not track the worth of consumer goods like cars in our net worth calculation.  She could have just as well have held a garage sale and liquidated all of her personal belongings, and we would not criticize her for failing to previously list her stereo and record collection and used clothing as financial assets.

Totally Agree, I don't count my belongings towards my networth because I never plan to sell them. I still have an ipod touch 2nd gen that I bought in 2008. Its slow and annoying but I will use it until it stops turning on one day.

For networth I only count property equity and money accounts like Forex, shares (at current value), bank ect...
