PCR Covid Test is this normal?
« on: November 15, 2021, 03:53:39 PM »
So i got a PCR test for a Knee Replacement I am getting Thursday. They swabbed my nose at the Hospital and the lady said I will know in 24-48 hours. I then just got an email on my-chart stating test results in. I click on it and it says-

COVID-19 Source 1
COVID-19 Source 1 Result   Converted to a separate laboratory order code. Results will be listed separately. Results expected within 72 hours. Final result will be labeled "2019 NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (SARS-COV-2)".
General Information
Ordered by Lisa .......(Doctor)

Collected on 11/15/2021 8:42 AM from Nasopharynx (Swab)

Resulted on 11/15/2021 3:40 PM

Result Status: Final result

You may see your results before your doctor has had an opportunity to review them. After your doctor has checked your results, a comment may be added by your doctor.

My question is are they saying there sending it out because of? or is this just standard practice?

Thanks

I'd interpret that as them sending out the test and making a reference to where the final results will be displayed in your record.

Thats what I was thinking at first but I guess i got suspicious because why would they bother which made me wonder then if it had a questionable result or something else.

Do you happen to know if they do pooled sample testing? I don't know how common it is but some of the tests I've gotten have been pooled tests. It saves a lot of money, time and test supplies to do it that way but there are some drawbacks.

https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-covid-19-and-medical-devices/pooled-sample-testing-and-screening-testing-covid-19

That could come back with some kind of weird non-result like "we have to retest you" or "we have to re-check all the samples" if someone in your pool tested positive, I think. I'm not sure exactly how it works.

This is a super-annoying thing with the specific medical record your hospital uses (same as mine) where it'll post a final result on something that's still in process because of <boring technical reason>. It usually happens because of <boring poor programming reason>. I wouldn't read anything into it either way, has nothing to do with the actual test, its accuracy or who's processing it.

For pre-op COVID testing we can't use pooled samples because we need to know if each specific person has COVID or not in a timeframe that pooled sampling doesn't allow. That is primarily done in surveillance testing on a population-wide level.

Good to know, thanks :-)  They do it at the NYC express PCR testing clinic near me that I've gone to a few times. I always get my results back in a couple of hours, which is amazing for PCR and super handy for when I wanted to visit my parents pre-vaccine. I'm not sure what they do if the pool comes back positive, it hasn't happened to me yet.

Thanks that eases my mind some. I dont want my surgery put off yet again and as long as this comes back negative I am cleared as far as all blood tests etc...go. Surgery is Thursday. Its just was odd to me because at least in my case of what feel for ever that we have had my-chart I have never seen a test result or anything that just didnt give you the result.

Test is back but even that they need to write 3 paragraphs...

Component Results
Component   Your Value   Standard Range   Flag
SARS-CoV-2 by PCR   Not Detected
Not Detected / Detected / Inhibitor Present
Isolation Guidelines   Do not use this test result as the sole decision-maker for discontinuation of isolation.
Clinical evaluation should be considered for other respiratory illness requiring transmission-based isolation.

- No fever (<99.0 F/37.2 C) for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications
AND
- Respiratory symptoms have improved or resolved (e.g. cough, shortness of breath)
AND
- COVID-19 negative test

See COVID-19 Deisolation Resource Guide
Procedural Note   Negative for SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV) nucleic acid in the specimen, consider other viruses.

A negative result does not preclude Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection and should not be used as sole basis for treatment or patient management decisions. Negative results must be combined with clinical observations, patient history, and epidemiological information.

This result was obtained by TMA based method and analysis by fluorescent probes designed for the qualitative detected of the SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV) nucleic acid. Performance characteristics for the test has been determined by ACL and are incorporated as part of FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).

This test was performed by ACL Laboratories using the FDA cleared Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) Aptima SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV) from Hologic. This laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) as qualified to perform high complexity clinical laboratory testing.

Good luck on your surgery! My mom just had a knee replacement 6 weeks ago. She's up and walking without a cane and driving again now.
