As others have mentioned, Ebates is a great website that allows customers to earn cash back on online purchases from major retailers*. There is no membership fee nor any required mail-in rebate forms. I've personally have been using Ebates for over a year.

If you are new to Ebates, you will also receive a $10 Gift Card as a bonus in your account for signing up if you spend $25 in one transaction within 30 days.

1. Register or Login
2. Search more than 1,500 stores and select the one where you want to shop.
3. You’ll be sent to the site that you clicked on to shop as usual, but Ebates will track your purchases the whole way.
4. Before you checkout, (in a separate tab) look up a Coupon Code for additional discounts, this could be an extra (% off) or even free shipping. Use any discounts that you have just as you would with any other transaction.
5. When you've earned $10 or more in your Ebates account, you can then request a check, you also have the option to deposit in your PayPal account or you may send your cash back to a charity, organization or family member.

(As mentioned in the Ting thread) -- After, post your link below and when someone clicks through you will get a $50 credit if two people sign up. If we all use the last link posted we can all enjoy the savings!

There's another site I use for a similar purpose that specializes in just retailers that sell outdoor gear: cleansnipe.com. Cashback percentages range from 3 to 10%. The rebates take I think 90 days before you can cash them out. You can get the money back through PayPal, and there's a small percentage transaction fee that applies (effectively reducing your rebate by only a percent of a percent, not a big deal to me).

A quick comparison with ebates seems to suggest Cleansnipe has slightly better rebates for the stores it supports. REI: ebates gives 4%, Cleansnipe gives 5%. Backcountry.com: ebates gives 5%, Cleansnipe gives 10% (!). Sierra Trading Post: ebates 2.5%, Cleansnipe 3%. Cleansnipe also has a small rebate for GearTrade.com, a very Mustachian used gear market, which ebates doesn't list.

I've been with ebates since 2008 and have gotten about $780 cash back in that time. I use it for travel quite a bit. If I am going to purchase anything on the Internet, I first check for an ebate. Even 1% will add up over time!

I joined a couple weeks ago (used a link from the prudent homemaker) and I just got a 10$ target gift card from them, and my first check got cut, sure, it was 3.21$ but still.

If you shop online, its not that hard to go thru ebates first and get some cash back.

There is a noticeable difference in the interface but when used in conjunction with the Ebates plugin for your browser, it is a lot easier to save money.

I just got a hell of a deal with Ebates on a new laptop, not sure if it is still available. Lenovo had a 35% off deal on their site, and Ebates was giving 17% back on orders at Lenovo.com to anyone with a brand new Ebates account, otherwise they were giving 8% back if your account was not new. So I ended up getting a beast of a Thinkpad laptop for about half off the regular price. Hope it lasts for a long time like my current one has.

TIP:

For those new to eBates PLEASE please keep in mind that you CANNOT already have something in your cart first.

In other words, if you have an item in your Amazon cart first, then open up eBates and then purchase the item, it doesn't count (as far as I'm aware). I missed out on a ton of cash back opportunities because I was putting items in my cart first and then opening eBates afterwards (because I was remembering right before making a purchase that I needed to open eBates). So just something to keep in mind.

Always go to the site you're going purchase from through the eBates portal itself.
