Non-Fed shutdown issues
« on: December 31, 2018, 07:47:00 AM »
The shutdown has a different outcome for some folks that aren't federal employees. Example: I have to take leave without pay for the duration of the shutdown. (No back pay.)

I have the option of going negative in vacation time for a few days, but from my perspective that sounds too much like going into debt to my company. Feel free to argue this if I'm being silly.

I'm leaning toward moving on from this mess and finding a new job for fear that this is going to drone on or happen again soon.

Luckily, the mustacheon way of life has me in a spot where I'm not panicking; however, I am so close to debt repayment that I'm pretty peeved about missing a beat.

That's what I would do, in part to send a message that shutting down the government programs that we already voted into law is unacceptable.

Agree with th option to find a new job. If you can’t float through these shutdowns on savings, then the job isn’t providing you with enough pay for the role. (Does that make sense?). If we keep having these disruptive shut downs, we will lose a lot of bright people who have more stable options.

A friend's husband works at a non-profit rehab that provides in/outpatient treatment, prisoner re-entry service, a health clinic, and childcare (staff and clients). Part of their funding is via government grants. His paycheck is a week late so far.

With the TSA sickout, many of us will be spending long times in airport security lines.

It sounds like you work for a contractor to the federal government. The occasional government shutdown is basically part of the deal with that position...there was a short one less than a year ago with the longer ones happening in '96 and '13.

This is becoming pretty normal whenever we have a split party government.  The younger Bush was the only president to not have one in the past 38 years, but he only had two years with a spit government.

I'd say either have a nice cash buffer and let it be one of the "turd sandwiches" of employment, or find a different job.  That different job will have its own set of turd sandwiches you'll have to eat
