Netflix vs. Amazon Prime vs. Hulu Plus vs. ?
« on: April 22, 2014, 11:59:10 AM »
I've almost convinced the wife to dump cable and to use streaming options instead. But, which ones? I'm curious to know what others think of the various options out there. Which did you pick and why? What do you see as the strengths and weaknesses of each.

I prefer using just one service, but am open to two given how great the difference in cost will be between our cable bill and these options. We've been sampling Amazon Prime and that's been working for us. We also like that we get the free shipping for many items that we buy through Amazon. We're looking for a good selection of movies and my wife follows a number of current shows. The only shows I watch are Archer, BBC's TopGear, and Bourdain's show on CNN, whatever it's called now (but I can live without them). I would love to get Game of Thrones, but it doesn't look like there's a way to get around it short of buying cable or visiting the shadier parts of the Interwebs. Hulu's interface seems goofy. Netflix doesn't appear to have anything that Amazon Prime doesn't. Is there anything else that we might want to look at instead?

Also, have any of you run into restrictions by not having a cable TV account for things that you would watch online (with or without a tv streaming service)?

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I didn't find anything when I searched.

Netflix has the entire series if you do physical disks instead of streaming.

I just recently actually have enough bandwidth to stream and have considered switching to Netflix streaming... but I'm hearing lots of complaints from friends that they just don't have many titles any more.  Does anyone know any way to peruse the list of streaming titles on Netflix without actually changing my subscription to streaming?  (I do have an active mail-the-disk account... just can't seem to figure out how to see streaming title availability without purchasing it.)

I just cut the cord and use Prime as my primary streaming service. Some of the major networks like CBS and ABC let you stream content for newer shows and Prime provides the option to "purchase" season passes for my can't miss shows, which eventually are free if I wait a few months. Also my cable provider allows me to stream content for some channels (most notably AMC).

Amazon Prime has added benefit for my family, free 2-day shipping, and 20% off items we regularly use - diaper and wipes for the baby and cosmetics for the wife (one of her non negotiable "luxury" items) and at $79/ year is a steal! Since March we've saved $126 and expect even bigger savings without a a cable bill.

We're on track to save $754 this year alone by cutting the cord and buying subscribe and save items off Amazon.

It's interesting that you say that because my impression was the opposite, that Amazon Prime's selection didn't really compare to Netflix's. We don't have anything at the moment, but when we did it was Netflix and I was fairly happy with their selection. I tried the free trial month at Amazon a while ago and was just not impressed. Hulu has a good selection of TV shows, but they pretty much just have TV shows, no movies, and I like watching movies too.

Does anyone know any way to peruse the list of streaming titles on Netflix without actually changing my subscription to streaming?

Strangely enough there's no way to get that information directly from Netflix's website, but they do publish APIs that other websites can use to keep track of what's available. Try something like http://instantwatcher.com/

We have streaming Netflix and love it. I have been able to get all the series I want, except GoT and Project Runway. :( I've been buying GoT on iTunes when I want to watch them. But if I could get the discs by signing up for the mail service, I might do that -- I think it might be cheaper. I can watch PR online.

We love Netflix because it has what I want (Dexter, Mad Men, Weeds, Breaking Bad -- up through the last seasons). It has what my husband wants (space, nature, and dinosaur documentaries), and it has what our 4 year old wants (Dinosaur Train, Rescue Bots, Curious George, and Disney movies in rotation). Plus, it has no ads.

We tried Hulu Plus but I was so sick of the ads that I can't fast-forward through. It wasn't worth it just to watch the current airing shows. We also tried Amazon Prime, but it didn't have the same selection as Netflix, including that was missing our son's favorite shows -- so that was a deal breaker. We don't want him watching them online and don't want him watching them with ads.

We stream it through our PS3.

Sustainable Life Blog just posted a comprehensive description of options. Maybe that will help? http://sustainablelifeblog.com/ultimate-guide-cutting-cable/

We have Netflix- both streaming and discs. We also have Amazon Prime, mostly for the shipping benefits.  I haven't been impressed with Amazon Prime's video selections compared to Netflix.

We don't have any cable TV at all. I don't miss it.

GoT is a problem- HBO doesn't make the series available on discs until almost a year has passed since they were broadcast, so you have to wait almost a year to see it on Netflix. (and I am sure they will never be available for streaming!) So you can watch the first 3 seasons by getting discs from Netflix, but the 4th, which is currently being broadcast, probably not until next year. Of course if you know someone who will lend you their HBOGo login...

Here's a list of TV shows on netflix streaming- not sure how up-to-date it is:

I used to have all three but dropped Hulu - the commercials were too annoying.  It is actually worse than watching normal tv with commercials because you have no option to DVR and fast forward through them and they repeat the same commercials over and over and over....

I have Netflix and have been really happy with it, but I mostly binge-watch runs of various TV shoes.  You'll be happy to know that Netflix has about 900 episodes of Top Gear!  I definitely get my $7.99/month worth.

I cut the cable cord three years ago and have not looked back. I currently am streaming Netflix and using an OTA antenna for live TV. Depending on your needs you can share accounts with someone else and get more programming. With basic Netflix you can stream it to two devices at the same time. Since we only needed to stream it to our main tv we traded codes to a friend for HBO to go. You can trade for Showtime, Hulu or whatever if you can find someone that wants to trade for Netflix. I just upped my Netflix streaming subscription to $12.99 and can now stream to four devices. I traded my code out for Hulu, HBO to Go, and Showtime Anytime. All of that for $12.99 a month. Loving it.

I used to have Netflix, but became too cheap frugal mustachian to pay for it.

I use two libraries.  Free.

And I have watched Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Homeland, etc.  Just a bit later than most other folks.  Patience is a virtue.

see if a friend will let you use their HBO Go code, that's what we do to watch GoT :)

hard to say what would suit you best/be least disruptive to transitioning from cable, since I've never had cable in my adult life and what we have now is a huuuuuuuuge luxurious upgrade from the previous setup (CRT TV, no antenna, only used to watch DVDs), but, maybe my info will help. we currently have Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus, which we watch through a Roku, plus an OTA antenna. Amazon Prime we mostly got for the free shipping, but having the streaming video as well makes it worth the money, IMO... there are plenty of good free (esp older) movies on there which we find ourselves turning to when we're randomly in the mood for a movie we don't own. not sure what they have for TV shows but I'm sure you can find that info online. GoT, Daily Show and Colbert Report are the only shows we watch regularly, we got Hulu Plus so we could stop watching the latter two on our laptop and watch them through Roku instead, but really we just need to get un-lazy and hook up an old computer we have laying around so we can just watch free Internet Hulu through our TV and stop paying every month *facepunch* :)

It's probably a little too much for some people, but you can get free hulu plus through bing rewards (plus free amazon giftcards), it's a little bit of effort every day, but not much. We only have hulu plus for this reason. We canceled Netflix when we realized we were never using the service. I'd like to have amazon prime, but cannot justify the cost for what it offers.

We use Hulu Plus during the "in season", then cancel it and get Netflix during the summer. That seems to provide us with the best of both worlds - we watch the new stuff while it's on and let new Netflix content "build up", while only having to pay for one at a time.

Thanks all for your insights, ideas, and links. This is helpful, especially because it can be difficult to see just what is actually available on these different services.

We use Amazon Prime, and trade access with it with friends who have netflix and hbo go.  All of these services don't check to see if you share them (at least as long as you don't get ridiculous).

Really though, if I had to pick just one I'd pick Amazon Prime.  They have a ton of BBC stuff that is pure gold and a decent selection of movies.

For streaming it to your tv I highly recommend the cheapest roku.  It's like $30, and there's no need for anything more complicated.

Netflix and Hulu+ here (we put Hulu+ on hold last summer during the off-season since there were no new episodes of anything we watch), plus all that the library has to offer (my library does a really good job of getting everything, or you might be able to inter-library loan items that your own library doesn't own). A friend gave us their HBO GO code to watch Game of Thrones but neither of us could stomach it. Can't you get a free trial of both Hulu+ and Netflix? I am pretty sure you can get one or two weeks of each for free (cancel before you have to start paying) to find out what each is like and if you'll use them. I love all of the British stuff available on both of these services, plus older movies, and we have Hulu+ to watch new episodes of Castle, the Mindy Project, and Comedy Central stuff like Colbert and @midnight.

SEATTLE—April 23, 2014—(NASDAQ:AMZN)—Amazon.com, Inc. today announced a content licensing agreement with HBO, making Prime Instant Video the exclusive online-only subscription home for select HBO programming. The collection includes award-winning shows such as The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Big Love, Deadwood, Eastbound & Down, Family Tree, Enlightened, Treme, early seasons of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood, as well as mini-series like Band of Brothers, John Adams and more. Previous seasons of other HBO shows, such as Girls, The Newsroom and Veep will become available over the course of the multi-year agreement, approximately three years after airing on HBO. The first wave of content will arrive on Prime Instant Video May 21. This is the first time that HBO programming has been licensed to an online-only subscription streaming service. This programming will remain on all HBO platforms.

In addition, HBO GO will become available on Fire TV, targeting a launch by year-end. HBO GO is HBO’s authenticated streaming service offering subscribers instant access to over 1,700 titles online including every episode of new and classic HBO series, as well as HBO original films, miniseries, sports, documentaries, specials and a wide selection of blockbuster movies.

“HBO has produced some of the most groundbreaking, beloved and award-winning shows in television history, with more than 115 Emmys amongst the assortment of shows coming to Prime members next month,” said Brad Beale, Director of Content Acquisition for Amazon. “HBO original content is some of the most-popular across Amazon Instant Video—our customers love watching these shows. Now Prime members can enjoy a collection of great HBO shows on an unlimited basis, at no additional cost to their Prime membership.”

“Amazon has built a wonderful service—we are excited to have our programming made available to their vast customer base and believe the exposure will create new HBO subscribers,” said Charles Schreger, President of Programming Sales for HBO.

“As owners of our original programming, we have always sought to capitalize on that investment. Given our longstanding relationship with Amazon, we couldn’t think of a better partner to entrust with this valuable collection,” said Glenn Whitehead, Executive Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs, who along with Schreger headed up HBO’s negotiating team. “We’re also excited to bring HBO GO to Amazon’s Fire TV. The features like unified voice search will provide a compelling experience for HBO customers.”

Beginning May 21, Amazon Prime members will have unlimited streaming access to:

- All seasons of revered classics such as The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome and Six Feet Under, and of recent favorites such as Eastbound & Down, Enlightened and Flight of the Conchords

- Epic miniseries, including Angels in America, Band of Brothers, John Adams, The Pacific and Parade’s End

- Select seasons of current series such as Boardwalk Empire, Treme and True Blood

- Hit original movies like Game Change, Too Big To Fail and You Don’t Know Jack

- Pedigreed documentaries including the Autopsy and Iceman series, Ghosts of Abu Ghraib and When the Levees Broke

- Hilarious original comedy specials from Lewis Black, Ellen DeGeneres, Louis CK and Bill Maher

The multi-year deal will bring additional seasons of the current series named above, along with early seasons of other series like Girls, The Newsroom and Veep to Prime members over the life of the deal.

Earlier this month, Amazon introduced Fire TV, a tiny box that plugs into your HDTV for easy and instant access to Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, WatchESPN, SHOWTIME, low-cost video rentals, and much more. Fire TV also brings photos, music, and games to the living room. Meet Amazon Fire TV at http://www.amazon.com/FireTV

I've had a Netflix subscription for a lot of years.  Recently we added Hulu and killed our cable TV.

I'm thinking about turning the cable TV back on.  Hulu hasn't been what we had hoped it would be.

NOOOOO!!!!  Don't do it!!!!!  Don't go back to the other side!!!

On another note, I think I just saw some news item about Netflix raising its rates for new customers.  Makes the free option (libraries!) even better!

Yeah, I hear you.  I've put some conditions on it though....  some financial milestones that need to be accomplished before it gets turned back on.  The way I see it, is if I'm saving roughly 50% of my paycheck, I can deliberately allow myself the luxury of cable TV as it is something that both my wife and I do genuinely enjoy having.

Why not both/all of the above?

We used to have a full cable package ($132) and Netflix ($8), and had Amazon Prime ($5) primarily for the free shipping but also for the streaming. That was $145 for all of those services. Well we dumbed cable TV and our cable bill dropped to $30 a month, then we added Hulu Plus ($8). So now for cable internet and Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu Plus we still only pay around $50 a month, which is nearly $100 less than we used to pay when we had cable TV.

With Netflix and Amazon Prime we have a ton of movies and older shows available, then the girlfriend loves Hulu Plus for all of the new shows that are available for streaming. Even with three services we can't watch everything, but who has time for that nowadays anyway?

Amazon Prime has been doing a far better job of attracting television content than Netflix (and has stolen content from Netflix). I only personally pay for Amazon Prime, but have access to Netflix, HBO Go and Hulu+ through friends. I most frequently use Prime. Perhaps Prime's recent success has to do with subscribers' ability to also purchase pay content as well. You grab the viewer by offering all this free content, but when the viewer gets it in his head that he wants to watch something that's not available for free, the content is (more often than not) available for purchase. For example, want to watch past seasons of Game of Thrones? You can for a price.

Hulu+ is limited in that you need to be a fan of very specific television programs for it to be useful. And only a few TV shows allow the entire season of a current TV show to stay on Hulu+. Most only allow the past 5 or so episodes to stay up for free streaming. But if you really, really love, say, Grimm, and you can't wait until it comes out on Amazon Prime streaming, then Hulu+ is useful. Most of what it streams, though, will eventually be available through one of the other streaming services.

I will add that Netflix is set to increase streaming prices. I'm not sure if they've announced how much it will be--probably an additional $1-2 per month. This would make Netflix more expensive than Amazon Prime, even with Prime's recent price increase.

I have Amazon Prime and Hulu. I don't really use Netflix. Hulu is free if you sign up for Bing Rewards and earn enough credits searching via Bing to get a free month every month.

We have Netflix and Hulu, and like many others we borrow someone else's login for HBO Go.

I haven't had cable for 3ish years now, and the one thing I miss is sports. The EPL being on NBC Live Extra has been a godsend, but no ESPN is fairly :( for me.

Newbie here ... taking baby steps as I am easing my family into this new hyper aware of spending lifestyle.  We just downgraded our cable package to basic ($40 monthly saving).  I've ordered a digital antenna to see how that works out for local channels and now I'm looking into Roku/AppleTV etc .. but I have a stupid question ...

There are other websites that stream shows (like ULive.com .. lots of the DIY channels there) ... I'm not sure if Hulu will carry some of these obscure channels .. so it got me to thinking .. why can't we just connect our laptop to the TV and use the laptop as our interface?  And if we can, why would we need a AppleTV or Roku or Amazon FIRE device?

Is that possible?

I'm pretty sure that will work just fine as long as your laptop has the necessary kind of port (not sure what that is, my entertainment tech knowledge is limited). neither of our has it but my boyfriend has an old desktop that does so we are going to try hooking that up, just haven't gotten around to it yet!

It's going to depend on what sorts of outputs your laptop has (vga and/or hdmi hopefully) and what sorts of inputs that your tv has (lets' hope something similar!).

Assuming they match, you can make it work.

The Roku-style connection is just going to be slicker.  It will have a remote and probably will autogenerate a "todo list" based on what you want to watch.  So: convenience.  No reason you can't make it work other ways though.

You can also build your own XBMC style player (as mentioned earlier) that will be slick and convenient... but I suspect an inexpensive Roku will be cheaper in hardware costs and in amount of watts it uses.  (Surely someone will point out they have a hand-me-down, very low wattage power supply they built theirs on and they'll be absolutely correct.  My statement is a vast over generalization.)

Thanks for the feedback .. my hubby said my laptop has a wireless monitor card/driver and he has a USB connector for a monitor so I think we are going to try to see tonight if my laptop will work.   Just curious .. we're new to this so checking out all the options available although I like the ability for the roku to aggregate the shows that we watch in a easy to navigate todo list.

Wonder if there is a web based service that will do this aggregation for those that want to connect with a PC/Mac?  Hmmm .. possible idea for future development??  :)

I have Hulu+, and it works for me because almost all of the shows I watch regularly are on network channels. How many episodes there are varies by show, not network; for instance, Scandal and Grey's Anatomy are both on ABC, but you can watch the entire flipping run of Grey's Anatomy while only the 5 or so most recent Scandal episodes are available.

I also love Hulu+ because they have all the Star Trek ever (except the movies, I guess). Combine my current shows with the ability to watch all the Star Trek without buying box sets or trying to find them at a library is totally worth it to me. They also have full runs of other old shows, so if you're into that sort of thing (The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda) it's cool.

We haven't had cable in about 9 years. don't miss is at all!

We use Amazon Prime and a digital set top box for local channels (our TV is 20 years old :), we use Plex ($5) as a local server and can stream movies/concerts from our computer to the Roku box ($60) as well as Youtube. PBS is one of the main attractions at our house.  This has been our setup for many years and it meets all our needs and let's us pocket that cable tv money every month!
