I make sure I separate the market gains and appreciation of assets from my actual savings and contributions.  In other words, if my 100K savings went up to 110K because the market is wild, I do not consider this the same as if I actually saved and added 10K to that pot.

I also exclude any appreciation my home may have had as I feel that its value doesn't matter unless I'm going to sell anytime soon.  Example, when I got married my home appraised at 200K, now it's worth 400K.  It means nothing to me because I'm not selling it.  It also means nothing to me in terms of how much I saved.   I'm happy it went up in value, but I don't confuse it with actual savings.

For some of my savings, in my Excel spreadsheets I have two lines, one for the amount I have contributed and another for the appreciation or loss that account may have.  Accountants call this "Unrealized Gain/Loss".  Example, I have put 20K in Apple stock, but it has gone up in value 10K.    This allows me to see into my net worth better and understand how well (or not) I'm saving.

I also track savings v growth. I have targets for savings, and dreams for growth.

I track savings, portfolio value and net worth. They are all different things.

Net worth increase in 2017 includes home value increase of 5%*

Total net worth increase of 24%

Liquid portfolio gain of 14.3% - final calculations not in until Q4 dividends realized over the next few days.

2017 Dividend Total =  $36,041.81

*(recent summary in Ottawa shows that average homes in my area are up 15%, however I only booked 5% based on my own anecdotal observations of our neighborhood).

We went up 33%

From around 370k to 540k or about +$170,000

Not too bad.

Just to give everyone lurking who's feeling bad about their relatively small net worth increases, mine was $27k.

We had a baby in 2016 and hired a nanny. My wife got let go, and now we don't have a nanny.. but we also don't have her income. We're considering toddler Montessori at this point when she gets hired - having a ft employee on your payroll is not a great way to go.

$326,427 / 10.9% gain in 2017, but I'm FIREd and have chosen less aggressive equity exposure. I'm happy with those gains, though.

It's going to be hard to beat 2017.  Possibly ever.  Our net worth grew over $900 a day on average for every day of the year.  $340,000 more in the old war chest and our total NW crested 2M this year.

This is very similar to me. 313K net worth increase. Total Assets 2.035M. And so far in 2018 January has added 121K. It's going so good, I feel nervous about it, like it seems too good to be true.

I had never thought of looking at it in dollars per day. I averaged $570/day in 2017. Just out of curiosity, I plugged in the numbers to date in 2018 and i’m averaging $2,200/day! That craziness will have to end sooner or later, but it is kind of fun while it lasts.

Back in 2001 when I started grad school I put $700 away every month (a princely sum to me back then), and my net worth increased by about that much each month. Looking back on 2017, I had the same amount of net worth increase every 34.5 hours...possibly less time if real estate appreciation is counted.
Wow, what a difference a year makes!

In 2018 my net worth of non-real estate increased by $700 every 59 days (~1420 hours) with new money just slightly outpacing the declines. Interestingly, while real estate increases were merely a rounding error for 2017, in 2018 they formed the vast majority of my net worth increase.

my next worth increased approximately by 6 figures this year, mainly in the past 3 months; I was short the mkt since the 50 crossed the 200 moving average.

Went from $2.4M to $3.4M total net worth all due to a knock it out of the park business year.... that almost killed me mentally and physically.  Handed off the business at the end of the year and now just consulting half-time to make sure its in good shape and give me time to think about what comes next as I only know how to sit in front of a computer and work all day and night, and so need to relearn everything else ;-)

7.8%

I'm still waiting for some final results, but portfolio was likely down 2-3% in total.  Lowest since I've started investing, but contributions were a smaller percentage of a now much larger portfolio

Oof,  net worth only went up 15K this year LOL!  Usually it goes up between 50-70K/year.

That's what a flat stock market, an unexpected car loan, and only 1-2% real estate appreciation in inexpensive housing will get you.

I prefer net worth over invome percentage in my 30s cause 1. I double my net worth last year due to it being low 2. Making it harder as I make more now so the dollar value increase isn't a good indicator either.

It's not perfect but I aim for 50%. Hit 54.1% last year due to the market and 34.1% this year also due to the market despite the most I ever contributed.

I am late to the party but have been tracking my net worth since 2014 when I discovered MMM.

2015: $60k or 26% increase
2016: $46k or 16% increase
2017: $85k or 25% increase
2018: $27k or 6% increase

Stock market must be down in 2018 because I know I saved more than $27k.  Oh well.

4% w/out RE value, my preferred metric as it is a cashflow property not an appreciation property (that calculus may change).

7% w/ RE value (always keep an eye on it just in case).

I think if I sift through it all, we are about break even because of the market swing, even though we contributed around 100k to retirement accounts/etc.

We did have an inheritance which, on paper, makes us gain about 12% of our NW.

So, I'll say we had a pretty crummy NW year because of stock performance.

While 2018 was basically flat with new contributions just about covering investment loses, 2019 saw significant gains with my benchmark $700 increase in net worth being achieved every 25.4 hours. That number is for non-real estate investments, and if I add in mortgage principal payoff, and a reasonable 2% appreciation in the properties, that time goes down to $700 every 23 hours and 41 minutes.

I’ll do a final in a few days when the market has closed and all our spending is in. At this moment, our liquid net worth is up $251,463 for the year. Out of that, around $166k is due to saved income, and the remaining from market growth.

Looking forward to final numbers soon, but can’t quite put that effort in yet.

2019 was a fantastic year for us also. Overall up $638k. Roughly $300k of that was contributions and $300k was market gains. Hot damn, the compound interest thing is powerful.

I still can’t quite believe those numbers.

I review the change in our Net Worth for the calendar year.
I total our cash back and other incentives for our various credit card accounts and bank accounts.  The information lets me know which accounts we will keep in the coming new year.
I also rebalance the investments to our planned percentage breakdown.

First year of 6 digit gains in NW and retirement accounts. Approximately, 33% increase in the former category and 35% in the latter.  Nearly half of those numbers is the result of new savings and the rest is market gains.

Our net worth went up by about 140K this year, or around 10%. Mostly its in property and I don't update their changes as we have no intention to sell any for a long time.

I'm happy, as this is about our take home pay too.

Net worth increased $131k for 2019.

Not even sure how that happened.  I put $19k into 401k, and $12k into IRAs.  I know I put some money into savings and taxable brokerage, but most of that gain must be from the market.

44% increase from end of 2018 to end of 2019. Does not include RE and I have some fuzziness with my wife's numbers but it should be right around that number.

Basically $100k for each of the last three years, of which $60k is our contributions to various accounts, and the remainder is debt paydown and market returns. Actually $111k this year and a shade less than $100k for the two previous. The $111k is pretty close to 33% of total NW.

Since starting MMM in Jan. 2017, we've gone from $42k to $345k!

I had a whopping 2.5% net worth increase for the year.
However, I have two kids in college, one very expensive,
So between living expenses, tuition*, rent and other kid support,
I spent $141,000, so I has very happy to see any increase in my
net worth. 2 more years and our spend will be closer to $50k a year.

I'm glad I read this post.  For some reason, I was disappointed in my growth this year ($313K), but when I calculated the percentage I feel a little better now.

I only track my own investments so it's not net worth or any of my husbands $$.  Mine increased 43%!

Have to take it with a grain of salt though...the US stock market had a pretty dramatic 20% decline in Q4 2018 and quickly rebounded in 2019.

So I was wondering if anyone sits down and figures out their net worth at the end of the year. This is my second year of doing it and my first full year not having debt. It was eye-opening, I don't feel like I am getting anywhere but I found out my net worth grew by 19%.

Yes. I do it twice per year, Jan. 1 and July 1.

For 2019, our NW grew ~ 22% ,including investments, savings, house equity, etc.

NW increase for 2019 was $179,000, or 28.4%.
