Need help deciding where to invest my money!
« on: October 03, 2018, 03:14:33 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have some money I am looking to invest and I am not sure if I should contribute to a Roth IRA or a brokerage account.

I am a Australian citizen who is living and working in the US as a permanent resident. My wife is a US citizen and contributes to her 401k through work and also a Roth. I on the other hand unfortunately don't get a 401k through my work so I am deciding between a Roth and brokerage account.

We have decided that in around 15 years we would like to move to Australia to be closer to my family so we think having access to this money is pretty important.

Would I be better off contributing to a brokerage account if we are planning to relocate to Australia as we will have more control over our money?
When we move we will be in our mid 40's so we won't be close to retirement age and will want to grow it some more while we are living in Australia.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sure would be great to take advantage of the roth for tax purposes.... But having control, especially later in life might be interesting. I'm interested to see if anyone has experience or knowledge about your situation.

The Investment Order thread has suggestions for both USA and Australia.  Don't know how they apply to moving between those countries.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
