FICO score plummeting from 850 to 825 in ONE month.  The end of the world as we know it it nigh!
<runs in circles, screaming and shouting, Aaaaaaaah!!>
bragging aside, it _was_ quite a shock.
Mustachians and fellow travelers are the only people who could possibly call this a shock.

Expecting it to drop further after canceling a redundant travel credit card (already got the miles, don't want the annual fee).

The "Mustachian people problem" part is that it twists the knife. If he hadn't said that, I wouldn't feel like such an idiot for waiting so long to get rid of him. Most non-Mustachians don't go around having those thoughts. But mostly, I just wanted to share with people who would understand. Just shoot me for putting it in the "wrong" thread.

Hey GreenSheep, you forgot that a major MMM People problem is that you have to be prepared to have anything you post here completely shredded and analyzed and often declared that you are wrong.  You say fire trucks are red?  This group will provide facts and figures indicating that nowadays yellow is preferred for various socio-economic and investing returns reasons.  The best part is you can end up considering angles you never thought of before and get a thick skin while you are at it.  Get your character built here for free!   ;-)

Total mischaracterization of most forum members.

We don't give a shit about fire truck colors, but we have a thing for boxes

WRONG. Jeez, how can you be so wrong? Airport fire trucks aren't red!

For about a year and a half now, we have used the American Express Blue Cash Preferred cash-back credit card for almost all of our purchases, earning 3% cash back on groceries, 2% on gas, and 1% on everything else with no minimum fee.  Nowadays I am getting bombarded with offers to sign up for different Amex cards, which I suspect is due to my account being flagged as one they don't make money on.  Most of the offers involve high annual fees and benefits that don't appeal to me.

The MMM forum is here to correct you... either you have the Preferred, which is 6% groceries, 3% gas and a $75 annual fee, or you have Everyday, which is 3% groceries and 2% gas? Now you have a real Mustachian People Problem!

(My MPP was - do I pay the annual fee or downgrade? Turns out we spend enough on groceries to justify keeping it - about $500 / month translates to $360 cash back, $285 net, whereas 3% would've been $180 net, and my wife also uses it for gas which pushes us a little higher, overall. Though MPP #2 is - do I try to get my wife to use multiple cards, like my Sallie Mae 5% on gas? But then will we exceed the $250/month maximum on gasoline? Probably not but the 2 cards thing probably won't happen for now.)

Ah, yes.  I can always count on the forum to tell me when I'm wrong!

I have the Everyday card.  The Preferred card is the only offer I've gotten that is actually tempting.  I'm pretty sure I would come out ahead but I don't know if I could convince my wife to change, as she already thinks our finance arrangements are too complicated and she probably would not respond well to my suggesting we switch to a different credit card anytime soon.  Win some, lose some.

I went to Costco recently to buy one thing.   They didn't have it, so I went to leave.   Y'all, it is really difficult to navigate yourself out of Costco when you haven't bought anything!   I had to "excuse me" "sorry" "coming through" my way through a lineup of people waiting to pay.  There was simply no other way.

I got a weird look from the receipt checker guy at the exit, too.

It is also super-hard to take a bathroom break (I have small children) because the bathroom is on the other side of the lines.

Geez, both of you - just walk back out the entrance. If you or your progeney need to pee/poop/diaper change, do a U-turn and go in the exit.

IDGAF what the sign says, I'm using efficient routing.

Since we're correcting each other, I would like to say...

Please don't say "Everyday" card to refer to the Blue Cash Everyday. Amex offers the Blue Cash Everyday, Blue Cash Preferred, Everyday, and Everyday Preferred. I know you actually meant Blue Cash Everyday, but the Amex Everyday is an entirely different product!

My paid-for-with-cash 15 seater van (7 kids) is carjack proof (an important concern in Atlanta!).

The driver's side door does not open. We've tried to fix it ourselves but can't, the auto repair shop says the part we need can't be purchased, and we're too busy to look for it at the junk yard.

People assume we're poor (because of the kids and older cars?) even though we have $5,000 of disposable income every month that goes into savings (for a down payment for our first home). So they give us stuff all the time. People give us food, clothing, shoes, books. It's funny. Most of it I just re-donate.

A big concert venue is having a food drive today for ANY person who wants to stop in.  It is about 5 miles from my job and I'm super tempted to go get some free food.

I just send a friend money using the rewards checking debit card via Square Cash. He also has an account and sends money back.
Unfortunately this can't be automated. Oh well.

My employer put me in a hotel for two months. They're paying for the hotel and giving me a bunch of money for food.

My problem is I don't know how to deal with the added income and reduced regular expenses without upsetting my accounting. I guess I just have to throw out (what could have been) two months of perfectly good data-collecting time.

This post made me think of my MPP.  I've signed my wife and I up for multiple cards including the Sallie Mae and Citi Double Cash (among a few others).  I cannot for the life of me get my wife to remember which card to use for which situation.  Basically, Sallie Mae for groceries, gas and Amazon; Citi card for everything else.

I noticed (since I tend to check Personal Capital/Mint daily) that she used the Citi card to buy groceries.  At first it kind of upset me because I have mentioned this to her at least 50 times before to use the Sallie Mae for groceries!  But, calmed myself down when I calculated the 3% difference would have equaled out to something like 69 cents difference in rewards.

The rotating categories are the worst.  I keep a list on my phone of the quarterly categories since I often forget.  I like the idea of putting in on your card-- I'd probably use a postit note.

Hey I often use postit notes for things like this and cut off the no sticky part so it's just the sticky part and won't rip off but is easily removed a few months later.  Do they sell post its that are all sticky on the back side?  If not, I've got a billion dollar idea!

I'll kindly assume you are joking, but tape hardly has the texture of a post-it note.  In fact, I've never seen a tape that was easy to write on.  Masking tape would be the closest, but it still leaves a residue  after it's been on just a few days.

Same! I just got a huge envelope with a "great offer" for 50,000 bonus miles on signup for one of their luxury cards - "we'll book your vacations for you!" "we'll find hotels for you!" "we'll sneak into your house at night and polish the doorknobs for you!" All for the low, low annual fee of $500.

The little side mirror attached to my bicycle helmet has lately fallen victim to erectile disfunction.  I have to constantly readjust it and it keeps slowly tilting downward.  The obvious answer is buy a new one but...you know.  Could I put something in there to make the connection tighter, or what?

"Washi" tape is the most similar to post-its. Easy to write on or tear, but comes off residue-free. Find it in your local fancy stationers.

Do you ever need to adjust the angle? If not, set it at the angle you want and coat the joint in silicone or some other adhesive. Should be good to go once it dries

There is an app called "Pick2Pay", you tell it where you are shopping (online or at a physical store). It tells you what the absolute best card to use based on the reward type (this includes every card even if you don't have that card). And it also tells you which of your cards that you actually have is the best to use (after you set up your wallet, you don't need to enter any card number or expiration etc. just which cards you have).
As a bonus it also tells you which rebate portals to use in conjunction with your purchase to get the most back.

I decided to get a big pork butt to make into pulled pork because I won't be home much this week and the leftovers will be great. All they had was bone-in, which I have never gotten before, but I thought - win! It's 20% cheaper, plus I will have a big ol' bone to use in stock or beans or something. Great. So I went to prepare it for the Instant Pot today and I was going to cut it into smaller hunks to fit better in the pot, and debone it in the process so I could cook the bone with black beans later.

Well, it turns out there's no bone in the damn thing. So now I'm kind of bummed because I was cheated out of that bone that I had all these ideas for. (...TWSS?)  I think I got too emotionally invested in how good my beans were going to be. :-/  'Cause clearly I *should* be happy that I accidentally saved 20% on boneless pork butt.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! ;-)  It actually worked out pretty well - I used a bottle of hard cider that had been sitting in the fridge undrunk for two months as the braising liquid for the pork... which then ended up with way too much liquid, so I used it to cook the beans (plus added a bit of water). When the beans were done they also had too much liquid, which I measured out and it turned out to be almost exactly 2 cups, which was the precise amount I needed to cook a batch of brown rice. So, no bones, but I used that lovely, porky cooking liquid three times! And I managed to do it all in my Instant Pot so I only had one pot to clean. Laziness Efficiency FTW.

It takes me longer to buy things on ebay because I use the offer feature instead of buy it now.

Haha. I know the feeling, but I would die if I tried that in NYC. It's at the point where I'm like, meh, that band that's playing a free gig a 90-second walk from the building I'm currently in isn't worth the trouble.

When my best friend and I go shopping, we always compete for who spends the LEAST amount of money.  I am pissed when she wins (although that is a rare occurrence)!

I use a pre-paid, pay-as-you-use phone from 7-11. You need to add money to the phone if either the balance reach $0 (so that you can use the phone) or if it has been an year since you last topped up. If you don't top it up within a year, you lose any money you had in it, and if you do top up, any money you had (along with the top up amount you added) will get rolled over for another year.

The problem is that I rarely use my phone, so I almost always reach the end of the year before reaching a $0 balance. So I have to top up to roll the balance over to the next year. I try to wait until the last moment to top up so that my balance doesn't continue to build too much. So last week I had to top up, and I waited until the last day to top up. The problem is the last time I topped up was an year ago, so I couldn't remember how to! So there I was on the last day before expiry at 10:00 pm trying to remember how to top up my phone. I topped it up, but the balance and the new expiry date wouldn't show ... turns out after topping up, the system sends you an email with a code and a link and you have to go to link and put the code to actually top up.

I did manage to figure it out before midnight so that I could roll my money over, but I'm sure I'll forget it again come next year. Hopefully I'll remember to top up a bit earlier next time so that I leave myself sometime to figure out how to do it again.

Greenway, I've had the same thing happen to me! I used to get a bigger top-up for the bonus minutes that came with it, but I never go through even the basic minutes, let alone the bonus.

Write it down on a post-it and put it inside the back case of the phone :)

I was on a 6 monthly $15 top up plan (yes that is what my phone used to cost - $2.50 a month ha). Problem was I also didn't spend it all... so earlier this year when I went to top it up I got a fright when it said $0.00 balance.

Turns out I tried to top up on day 182, when the 6 months ran out on day 180. Mad that I lost $37, but by then I had gotten a new phone with another carrier so I consider it my donation to them for being such a shitty, stingy, cheap, tightwad customer.

Can't think of anyone else who would only spend $240 on phone credit over 8 years lol.
