Mustachian in the mountains of BC?
« on: September 01, 2016, 10:19:09 AM »
We're nearing an inflection point in our lives where we can make a big move if we choose. Not FI, but with some cushion.

I'm a US citizen but attracted to the big mountains of the Canadian Rockies. As an outdoor athlete who feels at home with the adventurous tribe, I'm intrigued by places like Revelstoke, Fernie, and Nelson. Note: I haven't visited any of them. Yet.

I work for a nonprofit with a skillset including marketing, fundraising, social media, Wordpress, and grantwriting.

I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

Revelstoke!   I just went through this summer, and was amazed at the recent transformation into a resort / ski town plus summer.
Inquired into a triplex with income / live potential, it was so amazing.  I did not think much of it 10 years ago.

Gateway to many other areas..

Nelson is lovely, but definitely a "hippie' vibe in the community, and has been "discovered" a while back.  Fernie attracted lots of money from Calgary during the oil boom.

Other locations to consider include Clearwater and Valemount if you want to be away from "urban"...      (and Pemberton, if you don't mind being closer to Whistler).

I was attracted to Grand Forks and other town along HWY 3... although castlegar was a bit dry / hot the summer we were there.

BC had tons of mountains. Step 1 is to actually visit. Rent a place for a least a year before you commit in any big way to make sure it's really for you and to find the exact right landing spot. The Alberta side of the Rockies may offer better deals.

Small town BC will be very different from Tennessee.

It depends on if you need air access or not. Fernie is fairly close to Calgary and the airport. Castlegar (cheaper than Nelson, better weather) is a three-hour drive from Spokane, WA.

If you want to be doing travel back and forth it is significantly cheaper to fly out of Spokane than any Canadian city, especially in the mountains of BC where you will pay through the nose to be rerouted through Calgary/Vancouver. Also the issue with getting into the smaller regional Airports (esp. Castlegar)

Grandforks is nice, has the most sunshine days out of anywhere in BC and close to Christina Lake, would be good if you were location independent as far as work goes, have to drive a bit further for mountain activities if that is super important.

Fernie might have some deals available due to the oil industry tanking, It's a charming mountain community.

Valemount is small and pretty. We lived in Mackenzie for a few years and found the lack of services and family in the North a bit too much for us.

We have found Castlegar to offer everything we wanted without having to make any compromises. It is 1/2 way between the Ski hills in Nelson and Rossland, has an amazing riverfront park system, lots of hiking and mountaineering options, the Arrow lakes has enough amenities and is close enough o a big US city.

They all have super different vibes though, so it would probably just be a matter of where you feel most comfortable. Come for a visit!

Nelson is an awesome hippy type of town. Lots of cool stuff going on there with lots of big mountains around. I have yet to visit Revelstoke, but I hear it is absolutely amazing. I was just up in the Banff area and nothing compares (except Revelstoke I hear. Way fewer people).

I know mountain biking is huge in Fernie, but I haven't been yet. It is on the to do list.

Haha true that, TrMama! I have actually been to the Cascades and Rockies, just on this side of the border.

Thanks for the replies, all! I can't wait to visit.
