i thought this was a good story. being a millionaire isn't about earning big bucks but about spending less than you earn, and investing for the long term.

Very compelling, thank you for sharing. I’d love to know how he spent his days. As a Catholic, I doubt he engaged purposefully in meditation, but I do picture his life as likely having achieved something like a constant meditative state. Living, quietly, with no modern entertainment and very little contact with people, and yet seemingly content.

I was raised Catholic but don't practice anymore. I would say that the Catholic Rosary, Novenas, and devotions such as the Sacred Heart are all meditations.

Was anyone else bothered by the fact that the "heir finders" expected to receive a third of the inheritance from EACH relative? That seems excessive to me.

I assume it's a third of the inheritance, total. Otherwise, if there are 10 grandkids or something, and they represent all 10, is the inheritance supposed to first be split into 10, and the heir finders then get 1/3 of 1/10? Or they represent only one grandkid, and the other 9 grandkids find out about it through the first and avoid the fee? I can see in that situation why the heir finders would be annoyed. None of them would've known they had any money coming at all without the first company tracking them down.

Maybe other countries have better systems for this. Nieces and nephews can't be that hard to find. But if you're gonna leave it to for profit companies, they're gonna try to profit.

I don't begrudge them getting paid but I think some kind of "family deal" would be appropriate in a situation like this.

Ah like a group discount? I know almost nothing about this, but I would guess it's more work for them the more heirs there are. One heir, one set of paperwork, the company gets a third. 10 heirs, 10 sets of paperwork, the company gets a quarter? Maybe some companies do try to offer discounts. Seems so easy to avoid paying anything by telling the others yourself, maybe even a discount wouldn't be enough.
