Mustachian Flow Chart
« on: July 11, 2016, 02:07:48 PM »
I made a flow chart to assist the budding Mustachian when making purchasing decisions.

Suggestions?

What is the sequel chart?

Another thing I do after asking myself

"Do I really want it?" ==> "Wait a while* and then see if you still want it"

"a while" = a relative amount of time depending on how big of a purchase it is

Sounds about right.

Though for me I would add an "overanalysis" shortcut, along the lines of if "have you already spent more time considering options than the value of the item?" is yes, then "wait a few weeks", finally if "still remember that item?" is yes, just buy it.

DD and I were discussing this... but I can't wait, it's PRIME DAY!!! Face punch me. Prime day is very dangerous. Did buy a digital tire pressure gauge.

Will I die without it? Potentially.

This is pretty damn sweet--well done!  Though I was fully expecting to come across "Is it Convenient? Would I Enjoy it? Wrong Question." in there somewhere.  :)  Maybe a little bubble between "If you leave this need unmet...," and "Don't buy it!".

I'd like to print it out and hang it at work.  Umm.. But the others here would probably facepunch me.

This literally never works for me.

I've gotten better about waiting to a more appropriate time. But if I've decided I want something- I know I'm going to buy it anyway- it seems stupid to wait- because I'm still going to want it anyway so might as well get it.

Usually this is related to make up- or pure "splurge" buys.

It's a real actual problem for me. I'm getting better about it- but it's a huge issue for me. And my make up collection that's taking over the bathroom. And my wallet. and lack of fiscal savvy.

Ha.  I bought an Instant Pot from Prime Day.

We would survive fine w/o it.

A pressure cooker SEEMS like a useful tool since we cook everyday.  But we won't know until we try it.

Will it become a time saver or just a space/money taker?

Hopefully we figure it out within my free amazon trial return period.

I think your statement here is flawed:

The part of the flow chart I suggested is the exact part that would prevent purchases that were splurge and impulse buys. I have found that sometimes if you just wait a lot of times the want will just go away. It's helpful if you don't write down all these things you want because then you will just keep looking at them and tempting yourself... Don't keep a wish list just let yourself forget.

I'll give you a couple examples...

At some point like 6 months ago I was doing a lot of research into coffee and different types of coffee makers and all the stuff you can find down that rabbit hole. I was finding myself really wanting to get all this stuff to make better coffee and made myself not buy anything right then and waited a while. I kind of forgot about the coffee thing for a few months and then I started thinking about it again and realize that for some reason I didn't really care about it that much anymore because you know what, I have a drip coffee maker and honestly it works just fine and it's only real purpose is to keep me awake.

Also I have a garbage set of kitchen knifes from college and I have been really looking into getting some knives and was kind of set on getting a couple really high quality knives that were honestly just too damn expensive. After waiting a little bit I have come to my senses a little bit and while I still think I would like to get some better kitchen knives I should probably just go with someone high quality but more reasonable.
