Mustachian recommendations in DC during shutdown?
« on: January 17, 2019, 03:03:07 PM »
I have a business trip coming up soon with a free day in the DC area. I was planning to wander around the National Mall and some of the Smithsonian Museums, but that plan looks to be in relative peril the longer the shutdown persists as my trip gets closer and closer. I will still walk around the (dirty? barricaded? I've seen conflicted information) National Mall, but the Smithsonian would definitely be out. Any Mustachian recommendations for how to entertain myself on my free day? Anyone in the area able to share what things are still accessible within the National Mall? I'm really disappointed about missing the Smithsonian, but I'm trying to make the best of it. I mean, it's a free trip after all, and I've never been there.

The open air exhibits are still open, so you can visit: the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the WWII memorial, the Vietnam memorial. The Holocaust Museum is free and still open. It's not free, but attending a show at Ford's Theater is neat (https://www.fords.org) and often not that expensive.

All the Smithsonian museums and the zoo are closed. As well as the outdoor places already mentioned, the Capitol, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court are still open to visitors.

Beyond the Mall, there are also free or cheap places that are not supported by the federal government, so they're not affected by the shutdown.  There are many universities in DC; some have attractive campuses, with art exhibits or interesting lectures or performances. For religious architecture/culture/history/worship, there's the National Cathedral, the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the historic Sixth & I synagogue, and the Franciscan Monastery. There's the Folger Shakespeare Library (actually pretty close to the Mall).

And of course, private paid attractions are still open--the Spy Museum, the Newseum, Hillwood Estate, etc.

Seeing the "hiker" part of your username, there are tons of great hiking opportunities within an hour or two drive from DC proper.

hikingupward.com is a great resource for MD/VA hikes.

The National Building Museum ($10) and the US Botanical Garden Conservatory (free!) are still open too and in the Mall area

2nd the resource

Old Rag is a little treacherous for my taste in rain/ice/snow but Mary's Rock is my fave winter hike in that area.  Park along US 211 even if Shenandoah is not officially open and walk in.  Make sure to snag some apple cider donuts to/fro at the Apple House (exit 13 on I-66).

This has a decent list: https://freetoursbyfoot.com/visit-dc-government-shutdown/#open

I've been meaning to check out the botanical garden in particular, so let me know if you feel like meeting up with a stranger for that!

The Phillips Collection main collection is free on weekdays and in Dupont Circle (close to mall).

The Kreeger Museum is in a neighborhood called Foxhall. It's about $10 and includes a tour.

Thanks so much, everyone! I'll probably put off hiking until I'm back in the area not during the winter...but I'm definitely saving the recommended resource. My oldest will be attending college in Virginia in the fall, so we will have future trips back there to visit Shenandoah. I did get to run/hike some of the AT last November when we visited his future school. I can't wait to go back. Since I've never been to DC I was planning to hit up historically important sites in the heart of the city, and will definitely still spend next Monday there. I've arranged to meet up with some high school friends for dinner, so I am really looking forward to that even if I don't get to visit the Smithsonian (sob!).

@MonkeyJenga I'll check out the link and I'll send you a PM. :) If the government reopens I'll definitely spend a good chunk of the day in and out of Smithsonian Museums, but if not, I may be interested in the Botanic Gardens!
