HI All,

I'm tired of spending money on wimpy thin cotton shirts that just fall apart. About 20 years ago I used to be able to buy thick cotton long sleeve tshirts from llbean, REI, Cabela's (hunting catalog) which were great for working outdoors. Now all the outdoor catalogs have gone "stylish" and make things paper thin out of itchy nylon. They aren't functional. I'd rather spend twice as much money and have well made clothes that last 6x as long. Do good work clothes even exist anymore?  Sometimes I find stuff at the goodwill, but it's hard.  Thanks for any suggestions

Try Duluth Trading Company. They have both men's and women's lines. (Since you're from Outer Space, I'm not sure what gender you are, if any.) (Don't mind me, I've been watching way too much Farscape on Netflix.)

I've been using Duluth Trading for about a year--long sleeve mock turtlenecks, short sleeve Henley tees, and tank tops with "keepers" so bra straps can't show. Plenty of length in these shirts, and good solid fabrics...worn in the woods almost daily, and washed/dried a million times.

I laughed so hard reading this.  I decided I needed to go to Netflix to investigate what "Farscape" was.

I completely agree. If I compare the simple T-shirts I bought at Kohls five years ago to the ones I bought this year, they are much thinner and don't hold their shape as well. I don't even shop at Target anymore. Their stuff is total crap. I think the whole thin shirt thing is such a crock. We've been bamboozled into thinking it is more fashionable when in reality the reason is just so the companies can make crap for cheaper.

How is the Duluth Trading Company in terms of sizing? Do they run larger, smaller or true to size?

The Kirkland (Costco house brand) white t-shirts are thick, and seem robust so far. I use them as undershirts for martial arts. Maybe a year of use so far, individual shirts would be above 30 wearing/washings at this point.

Similarly the Kirkland jeans are nicely thick compared to most modern stuff. And less than $14.

Note that they get tumbled in the dryer for a couple of minutes to dewrinkle and then hung. We have a really high spin speed on our washer, and unless I tumble it really sets hard wrinkles.

I'm gonna chime in for Costco as well.  Their short and long sleeve Ts are great.  In winter they carry long sleeve wool Ts which are my favourite wardrobe item.

Duluth Trading Co., at least the items I've bought, have been true to size. They post reviews on their items, so I would advise reading the reviews for what interests you.

Filson makes some of the best clothing in the world at their factory in Seattle.

(They import some items now, so check before you purchase.)

I bought some really nice pants at Eddie Bauer. The outer material feels almost like canvas, and it is fleece lined. Very thick and warm. Have had them for about a year now with no notable wear. They do feel a little more flexible now though.

I am tired of the thin material too. I bought 2 t's from Costco a couple of years ago. I wish I bought more. I no longer have a membership. They are thicker and have held up quite nicely. I wash and hang to dry.  I do t find thicker t's like that often.

Not always. I've had some disappointing experiences with their pants (for women). It also drives me crazy that their made-in-the-USA items are not available for women either.

On this topic, if you're a hoodie wearer go to American Giant online and get one! You might balk at a $90 hoodie. Don't. It's so thick, durable and well made I feel like I could take it into a knife fight and do ok. Will last for freakin ever. Only downside is it's too thick/warm to wear unless it's actually chilly out.

Too bad you've had mixed reviews. Personally, I have 2 pairs of jeans from Carhartt that I alternate between and have worn almost every single day for close to 2 years which still look great. When these two die (probably another two years from now), I'll get two more pairs.

The biggest bit of advice for making pants (especially denim) last longer is don't wash it. The longer you can go without washing denim, the longer it will last. I'll only wash mine if I spill on them, sit by a campfire with them or wear them for 3 weeks of around the house wear without a wash.

;-0  Same guy---Rockne-- who created "Defiance", although I liked Farscape much better. But maybe because the lead actor is hotter.

I also think Carhartt is good although I think the "made forwomen's" (pink/purple) line doesn't hold up as well as the original farmer clothing.

Fisherman wear these in the Bering Sea...but again, not the pink line, which seems wimpier.

Try Woolrich, their flannel shirts are great.  They aren't cheap, but are a heavy and durable fabric. The womens are good and I have several, but I actually love the mens Oxbow flannel, just go down 2 sizes.  Not good for work, unless it is a casual work environment, but awesome for warmth and durability.  I am cold blooded and I live in those shirts during the winter.  I can sometimes find them for a good price on Sierra Trading Post.

I get really frustrated by all the see through clothing as well, where it requires you to layer If you are a woman not wanting to show off your bra.

My recommendation is to learn to sew and make your own clothes with fabric you can feel the weight of.

Farscape is awesome.

To the OP: any consignment shops near you? Unfortunately, it can be mainly higher-end brands that still have good cloth these days. An affordable way to get them is used, but consignment shops can be a better way than trying to filter through standard thrift shops. You CAN find good stuff at thrifts, particularly in affluent areas, but you do have to have more patience.

Personally, I actually like the thin technical fabric tees you're bemoaning. Cotton just feels way too damn hot in the summer. And in the winter it's so effing cold I'm wearing base layers instead of basic T-shirts anyways.

Women's clothing is even worse, believe me. Most of it is so thin you could see a nude t-shirt bra through it. It drives me absolutely nuts!

Trousers are also getting quite see through. I really don't want people seeing my underwear. Even nude underwear is showing through some trousers!

My husband complains about pants ripping so fast. He has to buy a new pair every second month. I love T-Shirts from Aldi. Their housbrand here is called Watsons. I bought some 1.5 years ago and they are still going strong. A pack of 3 T-Shirts were 5.99 Euros (I dont know if they also sell them in Aldi US). Those T-Shirts are basically all i wear at home after work and they still look nice even though i probably washed them around a hundred times by now.

L.L. Bean - they make clothing that lasts and their Pima cotton is nice and thick and looks good even after years of washing.  It costs more than $5 shirts at Target but the clothes last 5X as long, hold their shape and to boot have a lifetime guarantee that they honor.  I saw a guy walk in with a pair of work shoes that were heavily used.  He asked for a replacement, they asked what the problem was, and he said "They just aren't holding up like I want them to."  And they replaced them!

Yup.  LL Bean.  Can find good heavyweight stuff at Cabela's, too, either their house brand, or Carhardt and some others.  None of it will be cheap, but it will last.

Eddie Bauer "favorite" T-shirts are pretty good quality.  They also don't shrink in length or lose their shape after many washes.  They come in long sleeve, short sleeve, v-neck and crew neck.

One of my personal beefs is when I have to wear a cami under a t-shirt because they are so thin your bra shows.  These Eddie Bauer shirts are thick enough you don't have to do that.

I noticed one time a clothing line was using much lower quality and thinner material for the plus sized shirts. They also up-charged $2-3 for plus size. So you get to pay more to get thinner material. Or maybe they thought plus size people love see through shirts.

Note: This wasn't just a different style shirt in a different size, it was the same cut/style shirt in different sizes. I went through several shirts comparing the sizes and quality of material just to confirm it wasn't my imagination.

Go check the thrift shops. The clothes have already been worn/washed a few times so you can tell what held up well.

While I was looking up these Eddie Bauer shirts, I noticed they are on sale for $10.  I had just ordered 3 of them last week and paid $19.99.  I called customer service and they refunded me the difference immediately.   The whole phone call only took 5 minutes.  Another brownie point for Eddie Bauer!

I've noticed for the past several years that blue jeans seem to be made from thinner, cotton material rather than thicker denim like they used to. It really frustrates me. It seems that every pair of jeans I've bought over the past 5 years wear through and become thread-bare so quickly. Jeans used to last forever, now they're just cheap crap.

My wife buys me Ts second hand for about $1, so I don't really care if they don't last more than a year.

But, I do get tired of holes in socks.   Darn Tough socks have proven excellent.   I have 4 pair, one of which I've had for about 8 months.   No holes, and no noticeable wear.  I'm on my feet 8 hours a day, walking and climbing, so I"m hard on socks.    Darn Tough have held up very well.    Made in VT.   I get mine on Amazon, that way I can shop without having to put on pants.

This doesn't help for work clothes, but I was just at a White House/Black Market outlet and I was marveling at the thickness of their dress material. I get cold easily, but I probably would be quite comfortable with the sleeveless dresses I tried on because the fabric was so thick and warm. Alas, they did not have my size in the style I wanted. =(

Yes. The phenomenon is particularly evident in "fashionable" brands. It's one of the reasons I sew a lot of my own and my kids clothes.

I used to be the training manager for a well known teen to young adult brand that caters to men and women (we had a very large adult customer base as well). For women the shirts and blouses were so thin because they were "layering pieces" so we could sell multiple items. A woman comes in to purchase a "tissue" tee and buys a boyfriend tank (we couldn't refer to them as wife beaters,  of course) and a lacy brallette to cover her exposed bra straps. *BAM* 2 add on items for 1 intended purchase.

Yeah, I just noticed your location which I didn't see in the quote when I responded. That sucks, oh well. Maybe if a friend from the states is gonna visit pre-buy it or if you ever come down have it shipped to a hotel or something. If you REALLY have to have it that is, otherwise sounds like too much hassle.

I get the existence of that as both a fashion look and marketing ploy, but the fact is that it's IMPOSSIBLE to buy something decent anywhere. I spent eighteen months looking for a white shirt that I wouldn't have to wear a vest under. Didn't find one. Even places like M&S in the UK are doing it - no one their stock price has tanked! Plain, durable clothing is their raisin d'être and they don't do it any more.

I purchased some basic v-neck, solid color ladies t-shirts at JC Penney this summer, their in-house brand St John's Bay. The fabric was noticeably heavier than any other t-shirts in my wardrobe. Not at all see-through. And they only cost about $9 each. Their more trendy t-shirts styles are made of the thinner fabrics.

Bean precisely because I was searching for some white cotton shirts that I could put under open sweaters and those were one of the few that I could find that didn't show bras underneath.  The nice part is that they have a huge variety of cotton pima t-shirt styles, short sleeve, tank, 3/4 sleeve (my personal fave), long sleeve, v-neck, scoop neck, you name it.  They are also becoming slightly more modern in styling without being too trendy.  Eddie Bauer is similar, and I also shop there.  I prefer their pants, especially the travex ones.

I used to cheap out on clothing, but in the last few years I have decided to reduce quantity and go for quality.  It hurts at first to pay more for clothes, but in the end it's cheaper because you aren't buying things only to replace them quickly.  However, I find that I am way more selective.   If I don't absolutely love it, I don't buy it.

Love Darn Tough socks!  I have 3 pair and they are my favorite socks.

Is there anywhere online to get these brands secondhand?  The consignment/thrift stores around me stick to the kinds of things teenagers wear to school and adults wear to work in an office, not these kinds of brands.  Especially for women's clothing.  I have just enough clothes to get by at work, but I hate buying things for $60 and $80 at a time, since it's just going to get used hard and get dirty.  If there is such a place out there in internetland, I would be thrilled!

Try 6pm .com for outlet prices, not secondhand. For secondhand try Schoola look for one of the current threads about $50 of free clothes - it's upscale consignment with a deal going, though it's now down to $25 in free clothes. Local schools get a donation out of it, too.

Edit: here's the free clothing deal. The promo code in step 4 seems to have expired, but even if it doesn't work for you, it's still $25 free:

1. click on the link you'll get a $15 credit (have to do this from a computer, I think, not a tablet - I did anyway).  https://www.schoola.com/?ref=sm-3X51w6B1Y
2. Click the Collection tab at the top, and at the bottom of the dropdown it says Create New Collection. A new screen will pop up and on the left side where you can click create a collection and select your preferences. Make sure and save the collection - this adds another 10 dollars to your account. You can make a collection based around the brands you're interested in.
3. Browse the website and add $50 worth of clothing to your bag/cart.  the collection button has a under $5 section
4. Once you’re ready to check out, go to your bag and input your shipping info and payment info. Use promo code ‪#‎schoolasummer‬. Make sure to include the #. This coupon will takes 50% the total price. Half of 50 is $25, but you have earned $25 in free credit, so it comes out free!
If you use my link - I get another $15 credit.

I buy lots of Lands end especially for my work wear. I purchased a sweater. Even though it was the exact same style as one I had previously, my old one was noticeably thicker (and nicer) than the new one. I'm sure it won't wear as well. Sigh.

Sierra Trading Post carries some women's lines that hold up well, like Woolrich and similar.  If you sign up for their emails, sometimes you hit the jackpot where clearance is 80% off and you get even more off.  They are great for deals on comfortable shoes if you are on your feet all day, great prices on Dansko clogs. I've gotten $80 Calida PJs for $11 and they are so soft and last forever. They have a lot of casual stuff but they do also have work appropriate dresses.

I liked Lands End and LL Bean but I feel like their quality keeps going back and forth. One year the tees are thin and crappy, the next year they are back to the way they used to be. Lands End fits me well and has way more discounts than LL Bean, I get most of my clothes there on clearance with an additional percentage off. They offer more styles, as well.  And I have dresses and other items from there that still look nice many years later.  I use my Discover card and can get gift cards for $40 of my cash back that are worth $50.  Then an extra 10% cash back if I go to Lands End through Discover's site.  That has worked really well over the years, I don't want travel miles. And I feel like I rarely pay for other clothes.  My other best place was the Talbot's Outlet. I made out like a bandit in there and they have a ton of petite clothes that can be hard to find. Get notified of a big sale, come out with $200 silk dress for a wedding that cost $8. Their stuff lasts forever as well and is not as crunchy granola as the other places I suggested. But they moved an hour away, I'm not working so no use now.

Now, should you have a teenage girl and decide to try these sites, be forewarned, you will be insulted as having no style and your Dansko clogs will be hidden, actually all of my clogs have been hidden, lol.  In that case, go to Black House/White Market, take her with you, act like you are going to actually buy an item that is not on some super duper clearance rack but is full price, and tell her this is $150 less going in your college fund.  Giant FAIL in my case, she didn't even flinch. So I added two more items, then she stopped me, lol.  And she now has become a convert to getting more nice things for way less than retail. I'm glad she learned that for herself, now I don't have to listen to everyone has a Michael Kors purses except her, instead she says, "I would never pay that for a purse."  Good, because I won't be buying you one.

Yeah!  I also have 3 pair and don't think I will ever need to buy socks again.  I saw that they're 25% off at REI for a Labor Day Sale and was thinking about picking up another pair, but then I asked myself - why?  The ones I have will never wear out.

I wrote this on another thread, but I've been putting one pair through a test - I have worn the same pair every day to work so far this year, and there is little to no visible wear on them.  And I walk at least a few miles every day in steel toed boots at work.

I wish I could find jeans that held up as well as those socks.

I do buy Columbia shorts that last pretty well - the "Roc II" shorts.  I like the 8" inseam since I'm shorter and they don't make me look like I'm wearing clown shorts.  I have a small stock of them since I found a good sale once - I wear them pretty much exclusively in the late spring/summer/early fall, and I do a lot of outdoors stuff - hiking/kayaking/camping/river swimming in them.

Incidentally - does anyone else buy multiples of clothes they like (like my shorts) when they find a deal?  I look on it the same as stocking up on jar sauce or canned beans when they go on clearance for some reason.
