MIL Low Income, on SS, Only Rec'd $700 Stimulus???
« on: May 05, 2020, 08:07:35 AM »
Does anyone know if the government will provide an explanation to each recipient of the stimulus as to how their checks were calculated?  My MIL's AGI for 2019 is $9,173.  She called yesterday and said her check came and it's only $700.  I am mystified, as when I look up the info on line, I keep finding that low-income recipients of SS would be receiving the entire $1,200.  Does anyone know how to find out how their checks were actually calculated?

At worst she'll be able to get the remaining $500 when she files her 2020 return in 2021.

Any chance this check was for something else?

She could try Check on the status of your Economic Impact Payment.

Is it possible this is her normal social security payment (~$764) and she hasn't yet gotten her stimulus payment?

That was my first thought.  I had about 2 minutes of confusion a few weeks ago, when I briefly mistook my husband's normal direct deposit paycheck for either our tax refund or the gov't stimulus payment (neither of which we've received).

A couple of miscellaneous thoughts:

1.  If she received the ~$700 as a direct deposit, she could look at the description.  If it says "Treasury 310" or something like that, it's the stimulus payment.  If not, it's probably her SS.

2.  SS deposits have been a day or three early lately.  I've seen multiple people report this.  The timing being early might be what has confused your MIL.

3.  About two weeks after her stimulus payment is sent, she'll get a separate piece of paper in the mail from the federal government informing her of the amount of her stimulus payment.  She can use that information to figure out how much her stimulus payment was.

4.  +1 to filing and getting the rest of it on her 2020 taxes and the "Where's my Payment?" tool.

And yes, based on the information you gave, assuming she's single and nobody claimed her as a dependent, she should qualify for the full $1200.

My mother died a little over a year ago and she got the full amount.  Crazy.

She told me the check she received has DJT's name in the lower left corner, so it would seem it's her "stimulus."  Her SS check is in the vicinity of $860 per month.  I help her with her finances, so I am very familiar with her income and expenses.

My mom's monthly SS is $100 more and she received the full $1,200 (direct deposit).

$700 is an odd total.

Well, there are some possibilities:

1.  Her AGI isn't really as stated in the OP.  Unlikely.

2.  Someone else filed a fraudulent 2019 tax return in her name and claimed an AGI high enough that she only qualified for ~$700.

3.  She filed her 2019 taxes late enough to where the IRS based the stimulus payment on her 2018 taxes and her AGI in 2018 was high enough that she only qualified for ~$700.

I'd probably do the "Where's my payment?" tool and see if it spits out the same number as is on the check, and wait for the piece of paper from the Treasury with the number on it and see if that matches.
