Looking for a MMM quote
« on: March 30, 2014, 02:58:42 PM »
This might be a longshot. I am looking for a quote Mr. Money Mustache wrote in one of his blog posts. I believe he was discussing fitting in while being mustachian, and the key is to have neither the most expensive or least expensive of something.

From my memory, the exact quote was something along the lines of:

"Most expensive purchases boil down to purely fantasy ideas of how that item will change a person's life compared to the less expensive choice."

Any help on finding this blog post would be greatly appreciated. I want to share it with a friend.

I don't think there's any harm in you reading every single post again!

If it's in the 1st blog post then it won't take you long.

If it's in the last one then, well, you've learned hundreds of valuable lessons for a second time.

:) have fun.

If you go to the blog main page, then scroll down just past the ads on the right side you'll find the "Search MMM" window.

Try typing your memory's version of the quote and I think you'll find what you are looking for....

Good luck!

I checked the stoicism and hedonism blog posts with no luck. I also tried searching the blogs and still couldn't find it. I did find a couple blogs I hadn't read yet, though. Anyway, good luck!

I couldn't find it either.  The actual quote must not use the word "fantasy" or "expensive purchases" from what I can tell.

More context or any other information you can provide would help.

A couple of possibilities for you:

From

http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/12/26/cure-yourself-of-tiny-details-exaggeration-syndrome/

"The answer you’ll come up with is that everything is a tiny detail, and even your biggest spending decisions are really between two shades of a very close bright happy green."

from

http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/10/24/frugal-vs-cheap/

"I know several CEOs of multimillion dollar companies who are perfectly content to be seen in a Honda CR-V, and plenty of fashionable Los-Angelesy people who do not follow fashion brands at all. The key is that these people still understand social norms, but they are confident about not needing stand out at the high end of them. And that confidence earns far more respect than expensive products can ever attract."

Both of these were great posts, even if they're not what you're looking for.  :-)

"Most expensive purchases boil down to purely fantasy ideas of how that item will change a person's life compared to the less expensive choice."

Is "Many of the worst spending addicts are buying things because of purely imaginary fantasies about the social status they will get" close enough?

That's the one!!!

Thanks for all the help guys. MMM community is the best.

I've got a good friend who's wanting to buy a $2,000 watch because he's afraid a less expensive version might come back to haunt him in all sorts of ridiculous and extremely unlikely ways. This quote sums up my thoughts on the situations perfectly. Going to send it to him and hopefully we saved some unnecessary mustache shaving!

I started to, and I probably still will! But this one was a time sensitive emergency in saving my friend from chopping off his whiskers. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Two of my all time favorite MMM posts. The second was the one, thanks so much!

A $2000 watch vs a less expensive one?

Ask him why he needs a watch at all?

(thankyou MDM and TonyPlush, that quote really was a good one).

Hehe, yeah my teenagers have already rolled their eyes, told me thats soooo last century, and everyone these days has a multifunctional device AKA smart phone.

I'm a simple old woman and I like my mono function timekeeping device  :).

Update:

I shared the quote with my friend last night. Today He texted me saying he didn't really want the watch any more. The power of MMM! Thanks everyone for this great success story!

I'm still going for the zen of "neither"... unless I'm using it for a dive watch.
