Learning a skill such as carpentry
« on: February 24, 2013, 02:53:54 PM »
Reading MMM's blog has inspired me to try and learn a skill that could eventually lead to part time income.   Something is needed that would always be in demand. Carpentry really isn't for me - one area I think I might be interested in is tiling.  I have thought about putting an ad up online offering my services for free on weekends as a tiling assistant. Is anyone else trying to acquire 'blue collar' skills?

If Habitat for Humanity is active in your area, you might look to volunteering with them. There are potential legal and ethical issues with entering into an unpaid internship.

You could check a Home Depot or your local community college for their hands-on demonstration seminars.

I work on being a jack of all trades but I have found that laying tile seems to me more financially rewarding as it is simple but requires enough skill/knowledge to do it, is time consuming and backbreaking, and is high impact to the client.

I'm also planning to develop some more intensive DIY skills, although more to save money/for fun than as additional income. I really love transforming houses so my hope is to work my way up the property ladder with some flipping....especially as my dream home is not very mustachian (old Ontario farmhouse in desperate need of restoration, located in the country on at least 50 acres of fields and bush...with a barn). Plus, it just feels badass to be able to do things yourself, especially when you're female and people just assume that you'll therefore barely know a hammer from a nail - super inspired by another blogger, Kit Stansley at diydiva.net.

Doing anything is usually pretty easy. Doing it well it usually very hard.
Ask around if anyone is doing a DIY project and can have you help out.
Do your own place first (youtube is your friend, as is the instructions on the mortar:)
Better yet get paid to learn as a laborer for a tiling company.

FWIW I love tiling too but am so picky I can't stand to look at my own work- all I see are mistakes:)
Good luck,
ps pick up a smaller tile saw on kijiji, craiglist or your local tiling store- they are a great reference too btw
