Learn by Doing - Like a DIY Backyard Stage
« on: October 17, 2013, 03:39:52 AM »
I have often heard people describe themselves using comments such as "I'm not a handy person", or "I wouldn't know how to do that". Well guess what, no one was born handy, it is a learned skill.

In my mind, the best way to learn how to do something is to jump in and just give it a go. You will naturally seek out informational help as needed, but many things can be figured out on the fly.

What are some of the projects or skills you have taught yourself to do?

One of the latest projects I have just completed with my wife is a Backyard Stage for the kids.

I had never built a deck before and I certainly learned a few things that I would tweak if I build another one. I did however save a heap of money and gained a lot of joy out of the whole process.

I started the framing one night after work and we got the decking on the next day.

Some curtains were added and a bit of landscaping carried out.

And the new DIY Backyard Stage was good to go!

The joy of creating your own unique project far outweighs the frustrations overcome and learning curves navigated along the way. The more we do for ourselves the better equipped we are to ride out any future speed bumps or societal vagaries.

What are some of the things you have taught yourself?
