Latest recommendations for used small SUVs
« on: December 26, 2020, 07:20:22 AM »
My cost to replace parts is not merited based the book value of my 2006 small SUV.  What's the latest insight you could share on recommended make, model, and year for used SUVs?  NOTE: Anything would probably give us sticker shock, so it would be great to keep it around $15-16K max (which I think is doable given some initial research).  For perspective, my elderly parents had to tell me how to start their late model vehicle without a key, ok?  We. Are. Behind. The Times.  Thanks!

Are you looking at Ecosport / HRV sized vehicles or Escape / Rogue / CRV sized vehicles?

Do you want AWD / FWD / or real 4WD?

In the MD/VA area you can get new Kia Seltos/Sportages for $18k. Back in early/late fall they were going for as low as 16K new.  EDIT- rechecked Sportage for $15k new, ugh don't need a new car just yet but that's a heck of a price.

I'm sure if you hold out till next Fall you can get similar deal

that gets you bare bones options, but usually tons of safety features.
Kia's of course come with 10yr/100k mile warranty

We had a 2001 Lexus RX300 that we put 170k miles on and it was still running great when we sold it a few years ago. I highly recommend those along with Toyota Rav4 or Honda Highlander.

But beware of vehicles with CVT transmissions. They have many problems and are costly to repair/replace. We just sold our 2014 Nissan Pathfinder that was starting to show premature signs of CVT failure. It only had 65K miles...ugh!

If I'm not mistaken, Nissans are known for trans issues. Honda Fits use CVT with little problems.

My cost to replace parts is not merited based the book value of my 2006 small SUV.

Why?  The way I look at it the cost of replacing parts should be guaged against the cost of buying a replacement car.    I'd look at cost to drive X number of miles comparing repair against replacement.

Of course there are a lot of variables that are difficult to predict.  The current car, Hyundai, Honda?  Mileage.  Expected service life.    Other replacement/repair costs which have not yet reared their ugly head.

If you have an 06 Kia with 290K on the clock you might be sensible to replace it.   If you've got an 06 Carolla with 290K, you've got at least another 100K of driving - not w/o some future repairs, of course.     It might cost less to repair -even though book value doesn't justify it- than to replace.

Unfortunately it's kind of an inexaxct science.   And there is the hassle of breakdowns and the car in the shop.

My wife has an 04 CRV with 111K on it.   KBB says it's worth less than $3K     I woulldn't hesitate to put $3K into it rather than buy a replacement.     The likelihood is I can drive it another 200K cheaper than I can drive 200k in a replacement vehicle.     But, as I say, it's an inexact science.     JMO but "book value" just has no place in calculating future transportation costs.

I have a 2015 Mazda CX-5 and have been really happy with it. It's a fun car to drive, gets good gas mileage, and hasn't needed any work besides basic maintenance (knock on wood).

I second this way of thinking and not just for cars. I have spent more to fix things than they are "worth" many a time for the simple reason that replacing them is more expensive.

If you want a different car or your needs have changed and your car no longer serves them that is a different story. It is also a different story if the driving factor is not entirely the cost, but the reliability/unpredictability.

+4 - My sister, my mom, my BIL and my cousin all have CX-5's, and they've had NO issues among them. Good size and they corner well; the hatchback means they're good for travel and shopping. Also comfy enough for trips.

I just bought a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek but it’s not quite in the range you listed. I did drive a 2016 which is probably more in your range but I didn’t like it as they redesigned after that year and it’s a much better car now.

3 to 5 year old Toyota RAV 4, Honda CRV, or Mazda CX-5. All reliable and all drive well. Only drawback is the price (good resale value because they are good) but these are in your $15K to $16K range.

I'm assuming you want a "new" used car.
If saving money was the objective, repairing is always cheaper.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
