Lack of motivation, always tired. You'll never guess the cause
« on: January 13, 2018, 10:04:15 AM »
I was suffering for months from a lack of motivation. I always felt too tired to go out and socialise. I didn't want to meet up with friends. I didn't bother to make my bed or cut sandwiches in half. On the weekend I would sleep for 12 hours.

I went to the doctor and had blood tests done. I had a slight zinc deficiency. So I started with zinc supplements. But the deficiency was so slight that it wasn't actually the problem. I didn't feel any more motivated.

I took a 3 week vacation this December. Around the middle of week 3 all my motivation came back. All I wanted to do was go out and meet people. I was sleeping 8 hours again.

So it turned out my disease was my job. I didn't need to go for blood tests.

And I get to return to it on Monday.

I am with you..... a J O B would make me sick and tired and have a lack of motivation too. I'm tempted to say J O B 's should be against the law. I just threw up a little in my mouth thinking about a J O B. :)

So now that you are sick and tired of it.... start your own thing. There is never a more perfect day than today.

Jobs suck and they'll kill you if you let them.

I know its easier said than done but if a job is effecting you physically its time to think about doing something else if you cant make it into something that feels less like a job. It will otherwise slowly kill you and life is to short. Glad you found the cause! though. My daughter just found out and needs to take supplements for low Iron. Guess pretty common. She is an athlete at University so at least they really monitor it.

Warn your daughter that post university doctors will look at Iron last.  (maybe not if she has a history.)  My Doctor wanted to run expensive heart tests first for symptoms that could have been Iron deficiency, even though, I am Female, a Vegetarian and a runner.  Guess what I had low ferritin/iron but I had to really push for those tests and the doctor barely humored me.  I did get a new Doctor after that.

What are you going to do about it? 'Looking forward to seeing your plan. You're making a plan, right?

I took a 2 week vacation over the holidays and came to a similar conclusion. I will be ready to FIRE in 18 months though so it doesn't make sense to quit or find anything else. I make 100K/yr working from home doing interesting work with mostly decent people, the odds of me finding a better gig than this are slim to none. So I just keep visualizing handing in my notice, sitting on a beach in Mexico, etc., and reminding myself that the job makes it possible.

I am right there with you!  I have about 9.5 months until I FIRE and it is dragging by.  The work is so boring, so just marking time and visualizing how I'll spend my days once I FIRE (which makes me happy!).

I wish my problem were simply boredom!  I'm trying to make it 14 more months in a truly toxic work environment, but I'm seriously considering giving six weeks notice and just bailing now.  The only reason I'm still there right now is the money and what it can do for future me.  Unfortunately, present me is getting his butt kicked.

This means I'll probably have to take some work here and there to make ends meet eventually, but I don't think I can take 14 more months of dealing with sociopaths.

As of today I've resolved to quit my job and travel to Italy for a holiday with my dad who has been wanting to take me there for years as it is where he grew up. When I get back home I'm going to have a crack at freelancing. Either way it will just be a mini-retirement for a few months. Then I'll find a job that's easier on the stress levels if freelancing doesn't work out.

I've been looking at Italy recently as one of my vagabond retirement locations .

The 1 euro houses sound fun although i'd be ok age wise i'm not sure my partner will be up to building works by the time we hit retirement.

Have a great time

Find another job!  Truly toxic work environments are just not worth it, in my opinion.

I would suggest finding another job OR figuring out how much time off you need.  When I was younger (20's), I would get super grumpy, tense, and unhappy - and I realized it came if I hadn't had any time off in 6 months.

Now that I'm older (late 40s), I pretty much need a FULL work week off EVERY 3 months to feel refreshed.  (Even then, with demands of 2 kids, I might not be "refreshed".)

I like my job and the company is good to us.  Still though, I know exactly where you're coming from.  After a few days off I'm just starting to recover.  Last time I quit a job without a replacement lined up it was nearly 2 months before I had all my motivation back.  Funny, when I was doing manual labor I always thought driving a desk would be easier.  Nope.  Got nothin' left when I get home most nights.  By the end of the week I'm starting to hope for meetings at work because it's a chance to mentally rest.

Get out of there! Can you make it work financially now? Even bare bones FI? Once you are free you could create a new income stream or two (side gigs) - post a Case Study - let's work on getting you free!!
