Just thew a ton of stuff out in 2 hours. Much better now!
« on: January 28, 2017, 03:34:18 PM »
Almost felt like spring today and I started cleaning a room up, next thing I knew I'd done the whole place.

Its a strange thing when you look around and realize how much crap is lying around.

I threw a ton of stuff out, have to say my place looks and feels way better!

No, I live next to this forest so I threw it all in there.

That's good. Because next month you will realize you need something you threw out. Or at least, that's how it usually works for me.

We had a hurricane come thru and ruin a dam in our neighborhood.   The lake behind it had to be drained.

We found out which homeowners just threw their stuff into the lake...

I like to throw it all in a separate closet. Then when I finally come across it again and realize I haven't touched it in months, it makes getting rid of it an easy choice.

We're moving and our mantra is that we're only allowed to bring things that we KNOW we'd buy again. This has resulted in selling/donating massive amounts of stuff. About 75% of it seems to be useless things we've been gifted by my mother...

I used to write poetry and I once read somewhere that you should throw it all away and start afresh. So like an idiot I did... I'm still pissed off about that one to this day.

At least the stuff I threw in the forest I can retrieve, except perhaps the paint cans, most of thats probably drained away by now.

Hopefully this was licked up by local wild life before it drained into the water ways.

It probably wasn't as I threw it into a salmon stream, so probably just got washed away.

I do find it's an interesting exercise to go round your home asking yourself "this item would cost x to buy, would I pay that for it if I didn't already have it?", often I've found the answer is "no way". Of course it doesn't apply to items with sentimental value. I find clearing out clutter gives a relaxing feeling.

For items I'm unsure about I put them in a particular place in the house, then donate or sell them some weeks later. By knowing I have a chance to change my mind I am inclined to put things there in the first place. If I forced myself to make a definitive decision the first time I'd be inclined to keep items "just in case", so this "holding area" method works better for me.

I'm going through this process. I'm moving this summer so my rule is if I haven't used it since I moved into my current house (~4 years ago) I'm not moving it. Process is first trying to sell it on ebay for $20 or more net. If that doesn't work donate it. This is my side husle for the next few months.

Yup, I've literally gone multiple years without needing stuff that's just been sitting there unused. Finally decide to throw it out or donate/sell it and within 30 days of getting rid of it I'll finally need it for something and have to go get a new one. Every. Single. Time.

That or that thing you don't even know what it is that you hold on to just in case you figure it out and it's important? months later you decide to toss it and as soon as the garbage truck pulls away you realize what it's for and wish you hadn't gotten rid of it because yup, it WAS important and now you have an expensive tool that won't work without it :(

Every few months I bring piles of clothes to donation bins as the kids outgrow their hand me downs!

The timing of this thread is great, we are going through a massive clean up this weekend.  Huge.  The urge struck us and we have been going nuts, something snapped I guess and we are ready to get rid of a bunch of stuff.  I even went back to old boxes from my youth and threw out half a dozen old trophies from things I won in elementary school and some old arts and crafts.  It occurred to me that one day my children will need to go through all of my stuff and it is ridiculous that I am hanging on to this old crap so out it went.  They are meaningless and the fact the last time I thought of them is when they went into that box is a real sign of what their fate should be.  Move on already.

We live on a high bluff and we just threw it all into the crevasse.

Most interesting is that we removed the drawers from a massive, built-in dresser and found things from the prior owner that had fallen down behind the drawers, all the way in the back.  The home was built in 1955 and only had one owner before we bought the place in 2003.  There were 3 silk scarves from high-end couture and a hand made silk belt, clearly pretty old, I would guess about 60 years old.  I measured it and it was a 26.5" waist, incredibly small.  When my daughter was in 5th grade I don't think it would have fit her and she is completely normal proportion and average weight at age 24 now.  People have just become much, much larger in the last century since the prior owner was born in 1909 or so.

It has been a really feel-good weekend.

That never happens to me. Honestly I just pare down and down and I haven't regretted getting rid of anything. This helped me purge a ton of books, and I don't miss them.  I had a very satisfying time this weekend on a major purge of the garage.

Trying to get rid of some stuff that was sentimental to other people but that I feel guilty about. For instance, a knife block my father made for his parents when he was a kid. My grandmother died a couple years ago and my father died 30 years ago. The knife block was useful to my grandmother and she used it for , well, 67 years or something. But,.... I feel bad even saying it, it doesn't mean anything to me and I am caught in a condumdrum and feeling like I should keep it vs. it feels like clutter.

Give the knife block to whoever would be mad at you for throwing it out.  No one?  Toss it.  Forget about it.  Remember your dad and grandma, not the hunk of wood.

I have a few things around that have been were made by other people. Myself if they're not to big then I keep them around. I think there's a bit more to it than it just being a thing no value attached to the person who owned it before.

Big fan of owning minimal things. Huge positive effects of decluttering my life, most relevantly for financial discussions is how much less space you need & therefore how much less house you need. This works for renting too, where I always seek and claim the smallest room which means I have the lowest rent. My current problem is claiming the smallest room and the room still being too big... currently in search of big closet to rent out :P
