yikes I couldn't get on the last 4 hours this morning or last night using / trying 2 different browsers. (google chrome and Explorer).

(guessing based on my experience).   It's not the browser.  It's DNS.  The place that is hosting the dns seems to have 75% of it's DNS servers not answering.  (I don't know if they're under attack or if they're having other issues.)  In other words: you have a 25% chance of resolving the MMM domain.  Once resolved, your browser may cache it for a long time (yippee!).

your correct because it always sent me to a different site that started with DNS now that you say that. In my case no matter which way i tried to get in it sent me to Time warner

Pro tip: If DNS is acting funky and not resolving, you can visit this forum using the IP: http://198.199.66.251/forum/

You may have to log in again when using the above link, but it works just the same. If you remove the /forum/ part you can see the main site, however, links will not work correctly since they have mrmoneymustache.com hard coded in. You *could* right-click and copy the link and substitute the IP for mmm.com.

Here's an interesting thing.

I've been at home all week (Spring Break), but I just came into work (school) today.  I had saved this IP into Evernote this morning in case I ever needed it.

Yup, it's down at work.  So I use the IP.  No problem for most of the site.

Yet certain sections of the forums when visiting by IP are blocked by the work internet filter.  Which are NOT blocked when visiting the domain.  But other sections are not.  Usually a whole site is blocked or not.  Very odd.

Yup, PowerDNS - MMM's DNS provider has had issues staying up. They had several outages and are still not 100% back up. We will be switching DNS providers shortly. I am working with Mr. and Mrs. MM behind the scenes right now.

Hey, I saw one request for a "like" system and have often desired it as well (to cut down on the +1 posts).  Just a suggestion for future consideration, especially if the forum will be going down anyways -- a quick search revealed at least one SMF plugin: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3708

Dumb question for any of the forum members before we have the next DNS server outage-- is there a way for a user to search for the IP address?

In other words, if someone had not read this post and didn't know the IP address of the forum, would there be a way to figure it out from our browser cache or a Google search?  Yeah, I know, I guess a better name would be "manual DNS search"...

You can try any of the web dns lookup tools (use google to find a bunch) -- one of them might have the correct IP in its cache.

This is a good site to use to find out a site's IP address, I have MMM entered: http://viewdns.info/propagation/?domain=mrmoneymustache.com

Also, I am happy to report that we have switched DNS providers and that site stability and availability will be better as a result.

I say we get rid of the domain altogether so we can have a secret forum only accessible by IP.

The general bad news is:  the interwebs are absolutely dependent on dns.  (I.e. DNS *is* the way to search for an IP.)    But, yeah, it's heavily cached.  The more servers you can query, the more possibility of getting a hit.

On most computing platforms, you can also make your own local DNS entry in a hosts file.  I leave the details as an exercise to the reader.

Yes, it's a temporary fix and you'll know the IP changed when it stops working

Agreed, I just wanted to make that clear. The IP address changed today, for what it is worth, because we migrated to a bigger and better server.

Reposted (with edits) from a thread I started in Ask a Mustachian:

The past two weeks or more, this website has refused to load for me intermittently. I think sometimes it's been due to normal maintenance (as it's always during the wee hours, America-time), but it seemed weird that suddenly the site was non-functioning *every* night.

Today I'm getting this message for the first time: "The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem." This is only for the main website, not the forums.

Now, I'm in Australia on a laptop, so maybe it's just me, but my internet connection is tops, plus it's worked every night for the past year+ I've been reading MMM, so I'm a bit confused. It couldn't have anything to do with that company who threatened to sue MMM... right?

Any thoughts?

It has nothing to do with that BA, other than very slightly in a good way (that publicity gave more traffic to MMM, leading to a higher load on the servers).

Make sure you flag them as not spam, it actually helps gmail's filters for everyone.

Gmail's spam filter misfires when it sees words like "Notification" used many times, or when it sees a lot of traffic coming from the same e-mail address.

My Gmail account is always flagging notifications from Linkedin, but I laughed the hardest when it flagged an AdSense notification.

I can't seem to make this happen now.  If it was happening around an hour ago, then that was me.  Sorry about that.  However, I have tried it on two browsers now and it seems to be working.

I am finding access seems to go down during the morning (Australian time) - is the web site going down at specific times each day? It was down about an hour ago.

I understand that as our day is your night, if the site needs to go down, it is probably better to have the interruption during our day - would just be nice to know if it is regularly scheduled, so I can avoid that time.

Nope, you're absolutely correct.  It's me.  Something in the new layout is clashing with one of my browser plugins and I get a "page not found" redirect back to the top level.  Running it with no plugins makes it work fine.  I'll slink away and sort out my own damn problems.  ;)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
