Interesting program :: worth watching
« on: February 07, 2015, 02:24:27 PM »
Watched this a couple of hours ago and it reminded me how lucky I am - something I forget sometimes. He also makes some interesting observations re society and and the lack of community we have in our 1st world lives. Looks like it's in two parts - will watch the second tomorrow.

I'm about 25 minutes in... The topic is interesting.  The host is a disparaging asshole.  He is literally making fun of people who invited his into their home and fed him, and complained that he wasn't flexible enough to sit on the floor and eat with them.

Quote
"You have a wood house with no windows? What if it catches on fire?!?... an asbestos roof!?!... you eat on the floor?!?"

I suppose he was trying to be "shocking."  I don't understand how you could go into the slums of India and be surprised that people don't have a nice dining room setup ready for you unless you were just trying to be an ass.

I looked at his bio and discovered he's a "designer."  No offense to those who are interested in high society, but don't be surprised when the standard of living others are forced to live doesn't meet your "class."  What could be gained from this "documentary" was wasted on first world arrogance.

Pass.

He hosts a very popular series about people building their own houses, and it is somewhat in his usual style. I liked it.

Hong Kong has a growing sustainability problem and this is the result:

It seems like Dharavi is not only the result, but the answer for the people of Mumbai through the recycling efforts.  And then they think they can just redevelop it without consequence.  In a way, that serves as an example of how it is not very easy to change things to the way we think is better without knowing what is really going on.

On a side note, I appreciate how much real journalism still happens in the UK.
