Inexpensive internet?
« on: August 31, 2017, 08:09:41 AM »
Right now we are paying 60/mo for moderate speed cable internet.

We do a decent amount of streaming, so we can't bump it down to the slowest (which would only save $10).  Any recs?  We don't have cable tv or phone, so we just need internet, no bundles.

The only way that we found to get this cheaper was to share with the people renting the apartment next door. It worked really well for a year, then they moved and since then, no one has wanted to share.  :(

You're not likely to get "good" internet for much below that, unfortunately.

Apart from really changing your lifestyle to stream less/do data heavy stuff somewhere else where you can get free internet (upgrading operating systems, uploading videos, updating you phone, etc.). you're probably stuck with what you've got.

You could look to see what other ISPs are in your area, but usually one is not going to be much better than the others unless you can get a great introductory rate. I, for example, have one Cable ISP that services my address and a few DSL. For the price of cable, I can only get 1/2 that speed with DSL, so I am stuck.

We can stream just fine with the slowest internet Comcast offers in my area. Occasional but infrequent buffering and it's not 1080p, but it's perfectly adequate. It's 5mpbs and they don't even advertise that they have service that slow available. We pay $40/month

Do you have multiple good providers?  If so, take a couple of hours to call each one to see who has the best deal, then see if the others will match or beat, etc.
