Inefficiency: the enemy of optimization
« on: September 27, 2013, 12:55:41 PM »
We'll be getting a little philosophical on this one...be warned!

As people (in general) grow and learn about the world around them, in many ways, they become more efficient in their interactions and most some tasks.  As Mustachians, we attempt to become more efficient in more areas more rapidly.

Much of what we learn around MMM is aimed at decreasing consumption and increasing savings in order to bring FI closer to the present.  Alot of the awesome advice is about saving money.  We also learn a little about slowing down, or savouring time (after all; from time we hope to extract maximal happiness!).

A recent white paper I read http://www.ccl.org/leadership/pdf/research/AlwaysOn.pdf got me thinking about the old adage Time is Money, although I prefer to make a substitution to this by saying Time is Freedom.  Basically, this whitepaper outlines an example of wasted time and inefficiency created by the introduction of something meant to do just the opposite!

Now, to get you thinking a little more after a long work week, have a read of Kuriyama's "The Enigma of “Time is Money”" here:http://shinku.nichibun.ac.jp/jpub/pdf/jr/IJ1411.pdf

How do you see optimizing efficiency as a way to extract maximum value from your time and money?
