If you enjoy your job are you working or have you become FI ?
« on: September 21, 2014, 05:56:47 PM »
I have been studying part-time and was thinking if I ened up in my desired field is this viewed as work or do you consider it beign paid to do what you enjoy?

And then how does this tie into beign FI. Part of me thinks it is not being FI as I woudl still be relying ton thsi income to supprot myself it just happens to be that he way in which I earn this income is enjoyable.

My ideal plan is when I finish studying I have minimal debt. I envisfge this may be in 5 years time. In saying that I am near 40 and am still renting (no depsosit saved and have about $10k of debt which will I'll hopefully clear within 2 years).

I'm not sure the two are related.  FI to me means you can walk away from your job (whether you enjoy it or not) whenever you want and live off the income generated by your savings and investments.  I love my job dearly and can't imagine wanting to retire anytime soon, even though I'll reach FI by about age 44.

The typical person has 3 managers above them and gets at least one of them replaced by a new manager every 5 years.

You are only one manager away from absolutely hating your job.

Being FI makes you less interested in putting up with things - and, in my case, finding more that I was putting up with. I have noticed in other threads that people are counting down the days. I wasn't, but if someone is counting down the days, they are probably not enjoying their job, and maybe not as much as before they were close to FI.
