I just asked my employer if I could work remotely for the summer
« on: February 09, 2015, 10:22:24 AM »
Somehow I ended up in a long distance / long term relationship (Canadians are tricksy!!), and buying international flights was having a substantial impact to both of our financial situations.  I just formally requested to work from Canada for the summer. There's nothing I do that requires me to physically be in the office, so the only reason I'd be denied is if my boss doesn't want to allow it.

I should have an answer by Friday.  Here's hoping!

Best of luck.  I'd love to do the same.

Hope it works out for you!

How will it effect your taxes? Do you then have to file non-resident income taxes?

I would be there for less than six months - working for for a US employer in US funds to a US bank account while maintaining US residency, so I would continue to pay federal/state taxes.  From the research I have done so far, Canada only cares if I become a resident of Canada or if I am working for a Canadian employer.

That's awesome!
One thing I hate about the US is the number of states with "first day" non-resident taxes.  If you go to a single day of work/conference/work from a relatives house etc in that state you're supposed to file taxes there, and without reciprocity for many states it means you are charged twice on the same income since you still have to pay resident taxes
