I have $100,000 and don't know what to do with it

Since finding MMM I've paid off my debt (car and college). I'm now in the new position of having money. It's just collecting in a checking account which of course is stupid. What would you do with $100,000? By a cheap rental house? Is there a good CD to put it in? I'm pretty clueless.

What are your financial goals is the 1st question... do you need access to the money in short term for house downpayment?  or not... and can leave it long term?
