I am curious -
Why did you apply for this job?
Do you not want this job, or you don't want any job?

I don't want to do my job either.  But I'm willing to do it in exchange for money.

This comment made me laugh, because it's true. It's the tough love answer. What I have found helps for me, is to not look at work as a means to an end or only a way to serve little me. I look at it as a way to serve others, and psychologically, that helps. Put your energy into your students and see your work as more than just a paycheck. When you take the focus off yourself, it really does make work more enjoyable. Worth a shot.

This is what differentiates jobs from hobbies. Jobs are unpleasant enough that someone must be paid before they can be convinced to do it.

Hobbies are so much fun that people will do them for free.

The unemployment agency in Sweden requires you to apply for all jobs if you want to keep your unemployment insurance and you can not turn a job down. I am a really good software developer and this job is a middle school math teaching job. I suppose it is not all that bad but I am not at all prepared nor trained to teach kids math.

Because the contract is a time specified contract. I will be unable to quit in the middle of the duration to get a more desireable job. The only reason I got this job is because the previous math teacher quit yesterday and the semester begins on monday. I am the principles' last resort, and this contract is to be signed tomorrow. I am having major feelings of panics and anxiety. I even had two really promising software development job interview lined up that fit my expertise like a glove.

Is there the option to just turn down the employment insurance money so you don't have to take this job? Don't teachers in Sweden have to have specific teaching credentials?

What you're describing wouldn't even be possible in Canada, since teachers are required to have specific credentials that a software developer wouldn't have.

Can you just not sign the contract and pursue the other two jobs?

It's fine, I'll be teacher for a while. Maybe I will like it.
Yes, there exists teacher credentials but uncreditet teacher may be hired on a limited time contract.

I love the smiths.

I'm sorry you got a job you didn't want. Maybe think of your job paycheck as including all the unemployment you received.

It's possible you will like it a tiny bit.

What are the penalties if you sign the contract and then leave? Might be worth it.

You could refuse the teaching job (though it sounds like it is too late), lose the unemployment, and hope to get one of the other jobs.

Not fun, but an option. All depends on how much you have saved, or if you could get any non- professional/part-time work to tide you over.

Save what you can, keep looking, keep your skills up, and this will hopefully just be a bump in the road.

This seems like logical advice to me.  You can do other PT or contract work if those other two opportunities fall through.  I wouldn't jump at a teaching opportunity because they don't pay well enough to forego other opportunities; they don't pay that well in the U.S. that is...

I am starting my 27th year of teaching on Monday.  Please, if you don't want to teach do whatever you can to get out of it.  It's unfair to the students and it's much harder than you imagine it to be.

have you thought about being a substitute teacher? that may help you start off for the first year then ease in to teaching. If not, then I would go all out, give them everything you've got. I'm sure you've learned alot from this past year without work.

I got a job as a High School Mathematics teacher as my first career step out of college.  I learned pretty soon that I didnt want to be a teacher.  However, that all aside I loved the experience and looking back on the job it was a good move.

Just remember to stay happy.  Try not to give too much homework that you have to grade after hours.  What was most troubling about the job was how much time I spent after school grading papers.  I wish you the best of luck ;)

+1 (former teacher)

At the risk of being overly harsh, this question is so much bigger than what YOU want or need to do.  These are kids, at a very tricky phase of life, whose daily lives and futures will be impacted by your work.  Teaching is not just pushing information out into the world.  You are a custodian of their emotional, intellectual, and physical well-being.  Would you want you as a teacher?

If you take this job, don't fuck it up.

I took a teaching job (although teaching in my field, not middle school kid math, lol!) as a filler to get out of a miserable at will contract I was doing at the time. I thought it would be short term, I ended up doing it for 3.5 years. It advanced the shit out of my public speaking and preso skills, made me a ton of contacts and helped me immensely in earning a 'golden ticket' technical certification. I can't overstate the career capital I gained by taking that job which at the time seemed like just a placeholder.

Sometimes life takes some interesting twists and things you think are dead ends turn out to add value in ways you never saw coming. Do it, see it as an adventure, and for fuck's sake try to do a good job since these are kids you're teaching. At the worst you're learning people patience and the ability to quickly bone up on rusty or non-existent skills then shortly appear as an expert. Massively important skill for the human side of agile development, especially explaining things to management. :D

Welcome to #mathteacherlyfe.

Make it easier on yourself by keeping it simple and getting your classes into a routine. When mine arrive, we always begin with a problem solving activity (2qs (hard/normal) on the board before they enter, they know to come in, plonk down and get started straightaway). It gives you 5 mins to get the roll marked.

Next 15-20 is direct teach, introduce a concept, copy down any key terms etc,
Show the concept once, show again (have them write this down as the exemplar), then do one on the board together.

Then, independent work for the next however long, wander round, help those that struggle. Then answers/homework etc in the last 10mins. All the new-fangled teaching methods aside,
I find having a predictable routine works best overall.

Ps- no matter How good you are, sometimes kids are jerks. Don't take it personally. You'll get very good at smiling and speaking in a calm voice while wanting to throttle someone.
