Fellow Mustachians,

We haven't met yet, but worked through college reading these forums. I try to walk the MMM path. Measured, thoughtful, and frugal (on occasion, even aspire for badassitry). I've been working on a webapp called Paribus for the past year. We tried to crystallize a lot of what the community is about, and wanted to get the MMM's collective thoughts/feedback.

A lot of stores promise to give us money back when prices fall after a purchase (price match, price adjustment, low price guarantees). They'll also let us apply coupons when we forget (I often forget).

No store will ever do it for us. Its on us. Some of us monitor prices after a purchase here and there to save, but its a hassle to keep on top of it all the time. Most of us forget and we miss out on savings. Seems like nbd, until you learn that Amazon changes 80 million prices per day (True story) -- and that's just one store.

What if there was a service that just got you money back when you're owed? We think that would be badass. And thats what we're making.

So Paribus scans your inbox for receipts, tracks prices on what you bought, and when they drop, file price adjustment claims to get you paid. Set it up once in under a minute and save forever. We designed our business to sit only on the same side as our members. Our algorithms do the heavy lifting, and we only make money if we save you more money. We launched last month and we're saving our members an average of $5/month. As long as you link it to an email/account that receives your receipts (current, or one set up just for shopping), Paribus handles the rest.

So that's it -- here we go: https://paribus.co. Would love to hear your thoughts, good and bad. We're building this for the long-haul, and we will learn.

P.S. We'd also like to verify our mustaches. Our mustaches may be small. But with time and dedication they will grow.

Loyally,

Pretty cool.  I just noticed that one of my Citi cards (Preferred) has a price drop refund feature.  But you have to manually enter the purchase.  If it drops within 60 days, you get the difference as a statement credit.

Okay.  Interesting concept, but do you really think a lot of people are going to give you the passwords for their e-mail accounts?  that stopped me from looking any further.  It took me a long time before i gave anything like that to Mint, either, though i finally did.

Hey Prepube -- totally hear where your coming from. I think the value Paribus creates (piece of mind that you'll never overpay or be overbilled by stores), combined with rigorous security practices, gets us there. To eliminate the exchange of passwords whenever we can, Paribus authenticates directly with email providers (e.g., Google and Microsoft) whenever possible — that way you can grant Paribus access without transmitting any mailbox passwords. For mail providers that do not yet support password-less authentication (Yahoo, iCloud, etc.), all credentialing information is encrypted using bank-level security processes (256 bit SSL and AES-256 encryption). Both of these standards are more robust than methods used by Mint.com, for example. And Paribus also employs multi-level security mechanisms including dedicated firewalls, VPN services, intrusion prevention systems and stringent access controls throughout the architecture.

Hey kpd905, totally. Citi Price Rewind is a great benefit. But I think it could be better. You have to enter purchases manually, and then scan/mail statements to their reinsurer to get paid. A hassle. Our goal is to automate this process for people by the fall/holidays.

Hey Ricky -- we're bringing the name back from latin (Ceteris Paribus). Was used then to consider how one thing affects another, without having to consider all of the relevant factors all at the same time. We think that, at its essence, shopping shouldn’t be more complicated than finding what you need/want, and buying it. The word Paribus captures this. Just buy what you want, and if you miss a better deal (or are taken advantage of), you’ll just get the difference back. No hassle involved. That’s the thinking at least.

Cheers Yankuba, tip of the hat!

Awesome.  I'm not from here, but been here almost 8 years now.  Rare to meet someone born and raised here.  :)
