I both love and hate...
« on: August 02, 2022, 06:53:46 AM »
When I wear out an article of clothing. I love it because I feel like I've flexed my frugal muscles by keeping it long enough to wear it out. I hate it because I obviously like wearing that item.

Any other examples of love and hate?

I have the same feelings about my cars.  One is a 2003 and the other is a 2005. I really want an electric car, but I won't get one while my old cars continue to run reliably. I love that my old cars cost very little to own and operate, but I hate that I have no reason to get a cool new car.

Clothing (including shoes) is a big one for me. It is so hard to find stuff that fits at a price I am willing to pay.

And cars. Our 2009 is looking sad: it was parked under a tree that the birds liked for a few years at a condo, the fabric on the doors is worn, DH holds the steering wheel in a way that wears through it, as well, somehow bypassing the cover...but it runs great! And I know it.

The scrubbies we use for dishes is another. For most of my life, I had access to the crocheted ones my aunt made. I finally finished of mine and the whole family 's a decade after her passing. After a few fits and starts, we found something else we like, that is available in just about every grocery store, but we throw out the old at the last second and I always stop to think of Aunt Charlotte.

Fall, the season.

It's our best season of the year to be outside.

But it's followed by three or four months of snow, dark, and cold.

Oh, this one is sooooo true! I often say that fall would be my favorite season, except it's followed by winter.

SAME.

And while I admire all those electronic gadgets built into those EVs I really worry about keeping one long term. I'd rather have a simple car that happens to be electric. We have three ~20 year old daily driver cars at our house. When they rarely break or wear out a part, we do the repair with quality parts in our driveway.

We have a "good car" on which I'm rebuilding the front struts and brakes on plus some details just in case. I mean if I have to pull remove a bushing, why not replace it? Online dealer service quotes are several thousand dollars. The price to do the work in our driveway is in the mere hundreds.

Have it detailed. Might improve its looks in ways your didn't think possible. Over the years I've made trips to junkyards and purchased interior parts from lower mileage examples of my cars for affordable prices. Simple to swap.

I used to detail cars - Take that 2009 in and get a professional detail... I mean a $400 detail, not a $120 wash, wax n vac. If your headlights are hazed over, get them replaced. Yeah, 300 bucks seems like a lot for new headlights (or that neighborhood of price) but it will make your car look new. That $300 will be a reminder that a payment sucks haha.

I feel the same about spring!  I love the longer days, newly emerging leaves and flowers, bright sunshine... but I loathe the hot, humid, mosquito-infested Virginia summers with an undying passion.

Living by the ocean in coastal Newfoundland.

It's 99% love, but the wind and salt damage is no joke. I just spent a day repairing, sanding, priming, and painting our wooden garbage box with enamel paint. Then I looked at how nice and shiny the very prominent box on our front yard looks, shrugged and said "we'll see how shitty it looks next spring." Paint and metal don't stand much of a chance outside here. Even inside, our neighbours who live closer to the water have metal *inside* their house corroding. They replace their silverware every few years.

I was hearing a story about how a roof closer to the water actually came off last year. The salt corroded the old nails and the wind lifted the roof off of the house. It had to be strapped down until it could be replaced in spring. Tying down houses to protect against the wind is a thing here. Shingles don't last half as long as they normally should.

Plus everything is always wet because of the insane humidity. It's *great* for my skin, but the sheets in the closet and clothes in the dresser are literally always damp.

To pilfer from the fall idea, and not being FIREd yet, I'm gonna have to go with Sundays. (Day off is great but workweek looming...not so great.)

This reminds me of a convo I was having with some teacher friends yesterday!

If I was still teaching, I’d say: August.

Summer, lovely weather, but a looming sense of doom hangs over the month at the thought of starting up school and all that has to be done before it begins.

Leaving the profession has given me this month back.

I feel the exact same way about a good, soft set of sheets.

A brand new piece of clothing - it will never fit as well and feel as soft.

I totally get the comment about ends of vacations.  Good to be home, but bad to know work is right around the corner.

I think my boyfriend feels that way about my pastry cutter. It's a god damn nightmare to wash, but man, does it put out excellent pastry.
