I've spent too much time on these forums
« on: March 28, 2017, 07:27:01 PM »
I wandered over to the Bogleheads forum and got called out by the moderators for using profanity. "Fuck-that", specifically. I blame it on you people and the bad influence you apparently are having on me. I seem to be unfit for polite company now.

Mod Note: fixed that for you ;)

If you have time to spend on the Bogleheads forum, you're not spending enough time on here.

I got really animated in a job interview earlier today and said something along the lines of "I've figured out ways to get it done with being an asshole," and quickly apologized and figured she would end the interview right there.. She just smiled and was like, "we encourage profanity here." Made me want that job :)

Do you mean without being an asshole?

I love to swear! I find myself doing it more than usual after spending time here. Both of which I do a lot.

Their moderation is on point though, just have to follow the rules.

For how few moderators they have, they sure do keep the riff raff out.

The interview process at my employer has a profanity question/disclaimer; we are a bunch of male engineers so yeah we swear.  As far as I can tell the place is totally PC in all other ways but "god damn-mother-fucker!!!" will be heard echoing around the halls every now and then.

Personally I think the big difference is whether it is a generic expression of frustration (okay, comes down to personal preference and culture), or is directed at someone (always unacceptable). Since you say you are a bunch of male engineers, it is a good idea to check in once in a while and make sure that you aren't creating an environment that would appear hostile from an "outsider's" perspective, i.e. someone not a male engineer. As they say at my work, there is a difference between intent and perception, and the latter is what matters.

I say this as a female engineer working in an older/white/male/engineer-dominated industry. There are plenty of times that I have been working in that bro culture with people who have zero intent of being offensive, but can have the effect of being quite alienating all the same to anyone who doesn't fit the old boys' club stereotype.

Anyway, sorry to derail my own thread. :)

Yes 100%.  It is always generic or directed at an external entity not within ear shot.  I have friends that work at local ship yards and what I hear of going on there is horrible - yelling at people in meeting apparently is common.  Very much not Bro culture here.

I do marketing for engineering firms. Pretty much the only swearing I hear is from the marketing and admin teams. We have this tiny Australian mother of two whose every other word out of her mouth is "fuck." (A cultural thing?) All the male engineers I work with are respectful to a fault until you can finally get them to relax around you.

It is a code shifting thing, they also probably use different technical terms with you or other outsiders than they would with each other (assuming you have more a marketing background and not an engineering one).  Its about understanding your audience and showing respect to them and wanting them to understand what you are talking about vs trying to sound smart.  I have encountered people (I am looking at you internet nutrition experts) that when asked a question by a layman will jump right into big long gobbledygook words; I cant help but think they are not trying to educate me but rather want to sound smart or they dont really know what they are talking about and must rely on fancy words to overwhelm me.  If you ask an expert something and they know you are an outsider and they reply with insider words 1) either dont understand the material and/or 2) they are a fucking dumb ass.

Australians can swear with the best of them.

I work as an elementary school teacher and I am a volunteer firefighter (routinely riding shifts with paid crews).  The dichotomy between both jobs when it comes to swearing is very obvious.  I couldn't say, "crap" or "darn" at school without it being a major deal.  I won't repeat the crudest statement overheard or shouted at the station, but most stuff is heavily seasoned with profanity.  If I was to say, "crap" there they would mercilessly taunt me for not just saying "shit" instead.

Personally, I don't mind profanity.  I like the firehouse a lot more than the classroom.

I work with many a person who doesn't see the difference between describing their broken computer as fucked and describing a colleague doing their (unpleasant but necessary) job as a bitch.
