I'm taking a mini-retirement

I recently became a millionaire in my local currency. Which is not much compared to USD millionaires. Anyway I'm already tired after 4 years of working.

So I quit.

I'm taking about 3 months off. Also going to Italy with my dad for a holiday for two weeks. Its where he was born and I'd like him to show it to me while we still have the chance and he is alive.

I don't have a new job lined up, but I have enough money to keep me going for a while. It also gives me the opportunity to try freelancing.
I'm about a quarter of the way to FIRE.

I quit and travelled for 3 months back when I was 29. Best thing ever.

I don’t think it set me back in terms of early retirement at all, as it allowed me to move industries which led to a higher salary later on. If anything I possibly wish I had taken more time off work when I was younger, but it is definitely a balancing act to take off as much time as possible without hindering your career or hindering savings. I have no regrets.

I managed 3 months off at 29 and another 3 months off at 36. I am now 46 and will take an indefinite amount of time off from the end of this year. Maybe permanent time off, but at least 6 months.

I like it.   I'm planning this next summer (2019).   It may turn into a maxi-retirement though...  :-)    When I was younger I did this twice, once in the middle of grad school, and the second time I was able to finagle 2 months off without quitting.   It was great!

An update.

I'm now a month and a week into my mini-retirement. Time has flown so fast. I've been doing online courses and discovered a new potential career path that I think I may pursue. Fixed up my diet and started going to meditation classes on Wednesday evenings. Made contact with some old friends. While I was working I could never bring myself to socialise on a weekend due to sheer exhaustion. This weekend I have two dates and two meetups with friends planned.

Life with out work-induced phases of depression, stress and anxiety is glorious.

Unfortunately my mini-retirement is coming to a partial end. I have to kick off some freelance work within the next couple of weeks. Although this still beats working the corporate grind and it will only be 20-30 hours a week.

Lessons learned:
FIRE will definitely be for me.
I don't get bored while retired. I still had so much I wanted to do but never got around to.

Seriously, though, many congrats on taking the leap. It's fantastic how much a solid chunk of unstructured downtime can change one's perspective.

Im 27.

I didnt plan much. I knew I wanted to update some of my software development skills as Ive fallen behind over the years. I also wanted to travel around locally but I haven't had the time. So yes for the most part winging it.

I probably thought about it for a few months. I decided once I hit a professional and financial milestone I could use a break.

The reason I decided to take it is straightforward. I have the money, the alternative is working, so I can buy myself some happiness for a couple months. I think I'll probably do this every 4 years or so of work
