How to work on the Road as a Mustachian?

Hi all!

I'm a wardrobe supervisor for a national broadway show currently touring the country. Yay! It pays well enough and I have a per diem which I try to bank a lot of by staying with friends/hostels/cheap airbnb places, but I'm looking for other ways to save, especially on food. I don't have access to a kitchen 90% of the time, so I eat a lot of peanut butter, warmed-up soup and granola bars. When I want a hot meal that is not some instant noodles, I end up splurging.

Just curious if anyone else out there has any tip on food on the road, cheap housing on the road, etc.

Also - I'm looking for housing in LA for a month in the spring if there are any takers : )

A while ago I was working in a different city for three months, and living out of a hotel room with microwave and refrigerator.  I brought along a toaster oven, which really expanded my cooking-in-the-room options!  Honey-glazed boneless pork chops for dinner?  Sure!  Quesadilla for lunch?  No problem! 

(I still eat those toaster-oven quesadillas all the time.  Tortillas, spinach, cheese, salsa, maybe some leftover chicken.  In my toaster, it is done in slightly under "bagel" setting.)

If you have an electric kettle there are tons of delicious things you can make! 

The googling term you want is "____ backpacking recipe"

Backpackers tend to cook only with hot water and are also concerned with weight and volume... perfect for someone who is living out of a suitcase for months on end.
