How many subscriptions do you have?
« on: April 18, 2022, 11:57:18 AM »
I just got my monthly icloud+ email receipt, and was wondering to myself why I was paying $0.99 monthly to store pics of cicadas, selfies and whatever other random things catch my eye.  $0.99 isn't a big deal, but these subscriptions all add up.  So far I've counted 10, plus 2 bonus.

  • icloud+
  • The Washington Post - $100/yr(?). It's available free through my library, so I'll cancel when the subscription expires
  • Audible - cancelled during the free 3 month promo period
  • Amazon Prime - The fees are going up to $139 when my membership renews.  I don't think I use Prime enough to pay this amount.  I'd rather pay for shipping or get a monthly membership
  • Kindle Unlimited - $10.99 I'm keeping this for now as I use it a lot.
  • Netflix - I don't use this at all, but it's bundled in to my cell phone account
  • Zipcar - I cancelled this month.  I was paying a low amount for a corporate account plus and also paying for insurance.  They have 0 cars where I live anymore, and cancelled the corporate rate option. So I'd be paying more for much less.
  • Gym - $25/month.  I stopped going regularly during the pandemic.  I'm keeping this one for now because I'm grandfathered in to a specific gym that I won't have access to if I drop out
  • Weightlifting club - This is just starting up again for $95/yr after pandemic closed it down for two years.
  • Chase credit card annual fee $99  I'm not sure if I'll cancel.  It includes one night stay at Marriott which was worth at least $99 in addition to points from using the card.  I'm just not traveling much though.
  • Security system - I don't have this yet. I have a Nest camera, but the footage doesn't get saved if you don't have a subscription.  There's enough petty crime in the area that might make it worthwhile
  • Disney+ - I don't have this yet, but I get a free trial as a new Verizon customer.

1 - Hulu
2 - SiriusXM
3 - IHG credit card (gets me a free hotel night each year for $49 - usually I can get part of this fee waived)

In the past at different times, I have had free trials of Audible, Amazon Prime, AppleTV, and the Panera coffee club (perhaps others I'm forgetting), but don't use them enough to justify paying monthly.  Recently I had a free subscription to DailyBurn (online exercise classes) and I paid for 1 additional month - really enjoyed that more than I thought, but I will be doing a lot of travel soon so keeping the subscription didn't make sense.

I like Hulu because of the ability to pause the subscription.  I have access to some other streaming services that my BF pays for, otherwise I would probably rotate through them, keeping 1 active at a time.

I'm paying $87 for SiriusXM this year.  A little higher than I wanted, but I'm getting a rebate from one of my credit cards to make it cheaper.  I call to renegotiate the price every year.

I don't keep any other fee credit cards - again, not worth the fee.  I do need to re-evaluate the IHG card (thanks for this post!) because I'm now under 5/24 and can possibly get a new card with a new bonus.  I do know the $49 fee cards don't exist any more, which is one reason I've kept it as long as I have.

I don't know if I would necessarily consider the gym a subscription, but I did have a membership for many years, and I went to the gym 2-4 times per week because I enjoyed their fitness classes and like the stair-mill for hiking training.  I dropped my membership during the pandemic (after they stopped offering video classes and I wasn't comfortable going in person), and I still miss it, but not enough to pay the fee ($40/mo - or maybe more now?) since I can (and do) go outside for free every day.

This is a good exercise. I thought I was pretty good until I saw your list. True confession time:

2 CC's with $49/year fees (IHG) - Gets us at least 2 "free" hotel nights/year.

1 CC with $69/year fee (SWA) - Usually good for a few free/reduced price tickets. We're not flying anywhere these days.

NYT - $1/week. Used to do WaPo, but like NYT better.

Amazon Prime - DH uses this a lot and I'm not going to get between him and AP. He mostly buys parts to fix things and he's a fan of their scratch-and-dent sections. If I want something, he orders it. I don't need the temptation in my life, lol.

Netflix/Hulu/Disney+ (so we could watch Hamiton) were gifts from Bonus Kid. When he moves out, I'm not sure what we'll do. Of course, this does mean we have cable as well, but no HBO or whatever else they have.

That's all I can think of. I'll have to ask DH. I have to say I was vigilant about this stuff pre-FIRE, but pay less attention these days. Overall, we're always under budget.

Before I break my arm patting myself on the back, I'll reveal that we do own a (paid-for) fancy-pants diesel RV. With fuel prices these days, those small economies pale in comparison. Good thing we believe in the save-where-it-doesn't-matter-and spend-where-it-does theory.

ETA: Oops, forgot about the Costco Membership. Mine was free for many years because my brother works there, but we both got married and I had to get my own. Dh and I have the $120 Executive Membership and just last week I cashed over $600 worth of rebate checks. It all went into my wallet, because the one who remembers to take the checks to Costco gets to keep the cash, right?

Another oops: I took advantage of s Super Bowl deal and bought a Sam's Club membership for $8. I wanted a couple of specific things, and I plan to utilize it for a large event later this year. I doubt I'll renew, but I deliberately didn't put DH on the account. If I use it enough, I'll let my membership lapse and do another promotional membership in his name. My Sam's doesn't have gas, but the one near our rentals does.

This is a good exercise. (^^ jinx)

- Hulu ($11)
- IHG Card ($49/yr) x2 for 2 nights/year
- NYT ($4)
- PBS ($5)
- Local paper ($1)
+
- Various streaming services for a month at a time (netflix, peacock, prime)
- Credit cards for churning that are canceled within a year. E.g., Chase Sapphire at $95 for the 100k signup bonus.

Just Kindle Unlimited, and that's mostly for my partner's business as he's a freelance editor. I read maybe two or three KU books a month, him quite a few. We're not the kind of people who sit around watching television.

I'm not sure this is exactly what the post intended, but this is how we think about subscriptions/services.

Amazon Prime
Disney Plus
Netflix
monthly parking space for fishing boat (think this counts)
annual boat/trailer equivalent of AAA
Waking Up App
Verizon's lowest gig phone/data plan in our jurisdiction
medical card with biennial renewal fee

Amazon
Apple TV
Spotify
NY Times online
Paramount Plus
Hulu
HBO Max
MS Office
AARP

Quick math looks like about $3.30 a day. Amazing value IMO.

I'm not too sure either LOL.  It's just been on my mind lately about how someone as frugal as I am got gradually sucked into paying for so many subscriptions. Have they crossed over from being luxuries to being necessities like a cell phone or internet?

Any tips? I've been trying to find free versions of some things, like using library apps to replace Audible and newspaper subscriptions, and cancelling services that don't provide value any more, such as Zipcar.

icloud - 99c/month

The Washington Post

Local paper (my husband reads it cover to cover every day)

Amazon Prime

Costco

Netflix

Gym/club - $170/month total for the two of us. This gives us year-round access to a gym and all its yoga classes, plus access to the social and restaurant space of the club (where I sometimes work if I'm sick of doing that at home) and an outdoor space with tennis courts and a swimming pool, which we use a lot in the summer.

PBS - we mostly have this for my MIL so she can watch all of their programming online

I also currently have a Patreon subscription of $5/month to a podcast I want to support.

You're probably right about the gym.  I counted it as a necessity when I was going 3x per week.  Now that I stopped going regularly, it feels like a luxury.  I'd replace it with the weight lifting club if I could, but the club has limited hours.

Hm, become an introverted bookworm who feels more comfortable around trees than people?

Truly, though...

My TV broke almost 20 years ago. I realized how addicted/habituated to it I was when this happened and that surprised me. I never replaced it and haven't looked back (this will make you an odd duck in social situations when you can't participate in the many discussions people have about TV).

I own an old car (boo for me) so don't need a car app.

Definitely the library for books, including audio books, but also where I live there are tons of those little free libraries that people put in front of their house to swap/get rid of books.

I only read free news (but I don't use ad blockers so guilt assuaged).

For exercise I bike, hike, walk, kayak, etc. and do bodyweight exercises.

I no longer buy from Amazon. I don't buy a lot in general apart from essentials, but when I do, I try very hard to support a local business even if it costs a little more.

Gym - about $50 monthly. This is brand new as of Saturday, but I really need to not be a couch potato and I think their group classes will count as external motivation. Plus, my friend goes there and she's going to go with me sometimes.
home phone - $13 monthly
Washington Post - going to cancel this and switch to NY Times at some point
Local paper - I want them to exist

I borrow my sister's Prime when needed, which is very rare. All the tv stuff is currently free through the cell phone plan.

If you have zero internal motivation, like me, then something that provides the structure to move around is a necessity. Paying for a gym doesn't cut it for me. But I think that signing up for a class, which is a specific date/time, will work to get me moving. And I don't actually move around enough on my own, as evidenced by the $1k PT bill earlier this year. Only necessary because I do not move.

I guess I should have been a little more clear.  I meant the Costco Membership fee and we are executive members now come to think of it so that's $120/yr.  You can only get the Costco Visa if you're a member AFAIK so I guess I loosely consider them one and the same mentally.

Amazon Prime for the streaming and 1-2 shipments a month.
CBC Gem for CBC Newsworld
Netflix/Crave/Apple TV/Disney+/Paramount on rotation.  Currently I do not subscribe to any of them but will again in the fall.
Costco, but I get enough cash back to cover the fee
99c iCloud.  This was cheaper than upgrading my iPhone to one with higher memory.
Patreon for one artist at a time, currently I am not subscribed to any of them but know I will again, probably in the fall.
East Oaks Studio online art classes.  This will not be renewed once the year is up.  It was great during the pandemic.
Home security, lowest level plan.
GoodFood meal delivery, I get 2-3 meals once every 5-6 weeks.
Visa card with travel points

Not sure a cell phone or even internet service is necessary for everyone but it seems to me most of these subscriptions are tremendous values—and I’m not even considering the widespresd theft of service when passwords are shared on a semi-permanent basis with friends and family.

We are in the golden age of TV.

VPN $14.99 every 6 months
Google Drive $1.99 per month
Patreon: $10 month to a friend -- I will never stop this.

I consider all subscriptions above non-discretionary and do not have them under the Expenses:Discretionary category/account tree.   I currently have zero discretionary subs.  I've been convinced by a few other members here to cancel my Amazon Prime, which I first considered extreme, but decided it doesn't worsen my quality of life, so it's not extreme and canceled.

I will never consider a telephone or internet subscription as discretionary.  I consider them utilities.  The landline phone bill was considered a utility, and I feel the same way with cell phone plans since they replaced landlines and they are actually much more affordable. (I remember AT&T charging 25 cents per minute back in the 1980's for a long distance call and thought Sprint was special at 5 cents per minute.)

I feel extreme pain when I sign up to spend more money in the future, much more than paying a larger one-time expense up front. I’m still working so a cost today is “paid for” today, but budget increases make me shudder.

Costco (thought about this for months & did a lot of math before signing up; it has paid for itself)
Netflix (we’re considering canceling for a while as we’re playing more of our video game backlog)
... that’s it.

I guess I own a car, which means I’m “subscribed” to an annual state registration fee, insurance, & maintenance for said car, but I doubt that’s included in your intended question.

Let's see.

Gym:  Mine is $42/m and includes multiple locations and fitness classes.  I go multiple times per week, but not as often as pre-COVID.  DH pays $20/mo for one location and just the equipment, which he rarely uses.
Online yoga:  $100/yr  (My gym hasn't added back all of the classes since COVID and I get horrible back pain if I don't do yoga a LOT!)
Echelon bike:  $400/yr  I bought it during COVID.  I've found that I like spin better at home and now my kids use it.  I also take their strength and barre classes.
Amazon Prime:  $140/yr  I held off on this for years, but finally relented.  I use the included music streaming, the Whole Foods discount, prime reading, etc.
Cloud backup:  $7/mo
AAA:  $140/yr  This pays for itself in discounts at various places.  Last year we had one tow, which also made it worth it.
Netflix:  $15/mo  - We bought this in lockdown after the kids asked for it for their birthdays.  We're keeping it for the time being as a yearly birthday gift.  Will revisit next year.
Costco:  $0 - My parents have some sort of corporate plan that they included me on.

Interesting to see where folks delineate subscriptions and bills.

Amazon Prime - Locked in for the last year at $120/year
Netflix - $19.99/mo*
Hulu - $7.99/mo*
Pandora Premium - $9.99/mo
Amazon Freetime - $4.99/mo (shamefully I forget how much this is)
Patreon for a favorite podcast - $5/month
OneDrive backup - $2/month

I, personally, don't consider credit cards, the gym, or other similar categories subscriptions but because others have listed I will too.

Costco - $60/year
Chase SP - $95/year
Amex BCP - $95/year**
Chase SW - $69/year
Delta SMG - $99/year
Gym - $92/month

*We have an account-sharing ecosystem: I pay for Netflix and Hulu, and we use others' Disney+, Discovery+, etc.
**The Amex BCP 6%back on groceries & 3% back on gas covers all the credit card annual fees, the Costco membership (not directly of course), and still leaves us with cash left over.

I pared down three years ago, here's what I have now:
Amazon Prime- Still worth it to us as we use it for music and video $13/month
Acorn channel on Prime- $6/ month
Audible (looking for a cheaper option)- I listen to audiobooks all the time and our library system is absolutely terrible.  I'm so jealous of all of you with these amazing libraries.
Canva- $10/month
Peleton app -I don't have a Peleton but their strength workouts are great.  The whole family uses it $13/month
Jib Jab for fun ecards instead of paper- $.60/month
Museum membership- $13/ month
AAA- $8/ month

I haven't used this option, but some library systems will let non residents sign up for cards for a fee. Some people in my on-line book club pay $50/year for a Booklyn Public Library card, and they said the audio options are great. Or look at other library systems in your state, sometimes they are available to residents state wide.

These kinds of threads are always fun. My subscriptions are:

Monthly:
  • Apple Storage: $1/month
  • YouTube Premium: $17/month

Yearly:
  • Turbo Tax:       $60/year
  • Google Drive:  $22/year
  • Running App:  $40/year. Probably just a 1 year thing
  • 1Password:     $40/year

Mooching!
  • Coscto:. a friend has me as the secondary card holder.
  • Prime Streaming, Netflix, & Disney+: various friends have given me logins. I’m not very TV oriented, but they’re nice to have on a rainy day.
  • AAA:  provided by my Dad, as my annual birthday present

I used to have a monthly Audible subscription, but went around collecting library cards and now I use Overdrive. I used to have a gym membership, and expect that I will again, someday.

This thread is reminding me of other subscriptions that I have.

I should go over last year's spending record.

Discovery+ - $7.50
Apple iCloud - $3.18
Netflix - $10.50
Consumer Reports - $35 per year - my oldest son loves this magazine so it was his Christmas gift
Sam's Club - paid $45 and then received a $45 gift card. Not sure if we will renew again.

Monthly:
$2.50 - Multicraft (Minecraft Server)
$1.99 - Google One Storage

Annually:
AAA
Amazon Prime
HBO
Disney+

For services that I can pay a year of, I usually pay for a year, and then cancel my subscription. That way I can use the service until it expires, and if I don't notice that the service expired, I don't need it.

Amazon Prime

Costco

Netflix - Definitely starting to think about rotating this in and out.  Unceasing price hikes are irritating.

Amazon Music - DW really likes having this.  It's quite expensive at $15/month for the family plan.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate - longtime Xbox Live Gold member, but did the 3 year for $1 upgrade.  About 7 months into that, but did top it up a bit with a deal I found (4 months for $24, got a couple of those cards).  Will try to keep it active by periodic deals like that.

Disney Plus - not active right now, but will eventually sign up again.  Rotating streaming services.

They're in different categories.  We have more than some people, but they've all passed our own cost:value assessment.
Entertainment :
  • Netflix $19.99/month
  • HBO Max $14.99/month
  • Spotify Premium $9.99/month
  • Hulu (we share our friends')
  • Disney/CBS (my parents gift this to my husband for his birthday)
  • Total $44.97/month
I'm OK with this.  We entertain regularly, and host tons of watch parties for movies/TV shows.  We also stream music through Spotify via Google devices in every room of the house and out by the pool every single day, plus I use Spotify playlists to make running easier.  We would cut down to just Spotify and the gifted services in a crunch.

Excercise/Sanity :
  • Zwift $14.99/month
  • Peleton (this is going up to $44/month)
  • Total $58.99/month
These replace gym memberships and keep my husband and I exercising by making it so convenient we literally have no excuse.

Food related :
  • Moustache Coffee Subscription $14 biweekly
  • Rancho Gordo Bean Club $39.99 quarterly
  • Costco (this pays for itself every year)
  • Bon Appetit, NYT Food, Masterclass (these 3 are gifts from my Mom)
  • Total $43.66/month
These come out of the grocery budget, and are <10% of it.  I could buy acceptable locally roasted coffee beans for ~$7 biweekly if I had too, but I am in a position where I can choose the more indulgent, more interesting option.  Same with the Bean Club.  I can afford the extravagance and it makes me very happy.  We would cut the coffee in a crunch.

If you cancel audible, after using up any existing credits, then like once per year or so Amazon offers you to join audible and gives you two free books if you do.  I always take up this offer then cancel after I get my free two books. I have like 6 free books now I think (or is it 8 I forget).. would of cost me $20 each.

Interesting regarding Turbo Tax as subscription.  I threw it in my Tax expense category instead of subscriptions.   It's really non-discretionary for me because it'd be like impossible to fill out the Schedule D with all the trades I do.   I wouldn't want to make any mistakes and I do a lot of trades lol.

Netflix
Disney+
Spotify
internet/tv,
cell for the kids (30 bucks/month, my own covered via work),
on-line backup (60 bucks / year),
NY Times digital + crossword extension,
a print newspaper for kids (about 200 / year).
A quite wide array of digital newspapers on a deal via work (I don't pay anything for it). Would not buy on my own.

Occationally a monthly public transport pass, maybe 2 months / year. Internet/TV (this also includes HBO max as part of the package).

Microsoft Office 365. Did use LibreOffice at home for some time but it just annoyed me so I forked out for an Office subscription when it wasn't covered via work anymore.

Occationally buy a monthly streaming subscription for specific things I want to watch, then cancel when I'm done.

Currently we have:

Netflix
Kayo (sports)

This is new for us.  The Netflix is specifically to watch a couple of shows like "Drive to Survive" and will be cancelled once we are done in a couple of weeks time.

The sports subscription is during football season only.  Our kids bought us membership of our football teams (we support different teams).  It allows us to keep in touch with the teams for the games we can't go to.

Ask again in 5 months and it will be zero.

Amazon Prime
HBO
Fitnessblender Plus
Headspace
Spotify
Marco Polo Plus (the subscription lets me listen to friends’ long rambly messages at faster speeds 😁)
1 local wine club (buy half a case at a discount 3x/year)
“Culinary club” at a local olive oil producer (buy discounted oils and vinegars 3x/year)

The wine and oil clubs are also fun because we get to attend free events for each pickup. Tasty snacks on gorgeous properties. It always puts me in a good mood.

Prime
Netflix
Three separate Patreons
Costco
Nintendo online (or whatever it's called)

I think that's it? We watch a lot of YouTube these days (which led to the Patreons) and could honestly stand to get rid of Netflix but others who use the account don't want to and I haven't pushed back on that very hard yet.

We could also probably get rid of Nintendo.  We got the subscription for the free games and so we could play online with my nieces but we haven't been using it very much for the last couple months.  But I think we prepaid for a year so if that's the case we probably just won't renew.

I used to have a couple of magazine subscriptions but those ran out without me noticing and I haven't bothered to renew them.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
