I've lived in the middle of North Carolina for 15 years, but am moving this summer to New England. Why, you ask?
I had this thought, during our "defense of marriage" debacle: "If I had a gay child, I'd move away from here so fast. Wait... I don't know yet if any of my children are gay. Regardless, why would I want to raise my kids -- regardless of orientation -- somewhere that has this problem?"
Also, I've had to have the following conversations with various public school teachers and principals:
1) No, it's not OK to give out Bibles just because "95% of our students are practicing Christians, and no one has ever complained before."
2) No, it's not OK to include Bible verses in your pre-exam review PowerPoint and then say, "But, of course, if anyone has a problem with it, I guess I can just re-do it and we'll try again tomorrow. Anyone?"
3) No, it's not OK to tell my kindergartener that she does actually believe in God and that "he would be so sad to hear you say that."
4) No, it's not OK to for other children to harass my kid for being an atheist, and it's not appropriate for the principal to respond, "Well, how'd they find out, anyway? Why's she telling people that?" Right. Because that's the issue.
Granted, this is in a rural county, but I don't think it's that different in the bigger districts.
Also, summers are hot. I mean HOT.
I'm outta here.
