How many converts have you made?
« on: May 12, 2015, 12:59:58 PM »
Since I gave the ER warning to my friends, two have "examined" their financial habits and started to make some changes.  They always knew I was frugal but I don't think they really understood that it could lead to FI so quickly.  I hope they stick with it all the way to ER, I want some friends to hang out with during the week!

Two - sorta. Hubby and my bestie were both good savers and frugal, but when I learned about ER and shared the idea with them both liked it.  Bestie and I are now both pondering, "what do I want to be when I grow up and it has to pay a lot of money that I will enjoy?" Hubby is thinking to downshift in a few years to have more family time.  We all like the security and choices a healthy stash gives you.

One-- my SO.  The only one that matters.  Anyone inspired beyond that in the future will just make me feel good about myself-- this one actually makes my own FIRE dreams possible.

Converts, I don't know.  But I got my husband to start reading, and he has embraced at least most the principles.  Between the two of us, we've told a few people who have started reading MMM's blog.

One-ish. I've got my brother interested in personal finance, but he's young (18) and is more interested in the Millionaire Fastlane line of thinking than the "long" frugal method. I showed him my investments after only 3 months of working and living frugally and he was impressed, but not so much that he's ready to give up MFL. That said, at least the kid is thinking about wealth and retirement, which is a win in my book.

My wife was already frugally minded, so it's not so much that she converted as that she became more focused on frugal living as a pathway to financial independence and earlier retirement.  I don't talk about it much with anyone else.

Other than that, the comment feedback on my blog articles seems to indicate they are helping some people find a better way.

I was talking to a friend who's already fairly badass. Told her about the blog, she seemed excited. I won't see her for a while, but may have converted her!

Also convinced a neighbor who's paying obscene health insurance premiums to look into high deductible plans and also the exchange rather than be limited to his employer's offerings. The employer switched insurers, and the new one doesn't cover a huge % of the services the family needs (speech therapy for the younger kid).
