I have so many friends that have 3 or more vehicles in their households and some only have 2 or maybe 3 Drivers in the household.  I am curious as to how many cars people have and what they are and how many miles are on them and whether you bought new or used.   Some of my friends literally have 3 car payments they make monthly.  I find this absurd.

My household = 1996 Nissan Maxima = 297,456 miles .......... bought for 400$ 6 years ago with 150,000
                           2007 Toyota Highlander = 112,000 ..............  bought new

I am mechanical and do my own work.  The Highlander is the wife's.  She insisted on new but i figure we will have it for 20 years.

We have 3 cars for 2 drivers (but that's down from 4, so... woohoo!?!?)

2005 Toyota Matrix/manual transmission -- bought used at about 50k miles around 2013 from an old guy that had recently had his leg amputated and could no longer drive a stick.
2010 Toyota Rav4/auto transmission -- bought used at about 30k miles also around 2013.
1975 Triumph Tr6 -- bought used in 1983.  Yes, I've had it that long.  Odometer inoperative, mileage unknown.  Make me an offer on it. ;)

All bought for cash.

2 cars, 2 drivers (2006 Toyota Matrix, 2009 Civic)

Neighbor behind me: 1 driver - currently 3 cars, but used to be 4-5
Motorcycle
Porsche Cayenne
Toyota Forerunner

Which is an improvement, because before he got the Cayenne, he also had a Porsche 911 AND an old Mercedes.  He may still have the Mercedes, but I haven't seen it.  Plus he had a little convertible that he bought for his daughter, who didn't have a license yet.

Neighbors down the street: 2 drivers, 4 cars
Van, work truck, SUV, RV

2 cars.

Me: 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid
Wife: 2014 Ford C-Max Energi Plug-in Hybrid

Very fuel-efficient vehicles with low maintenance costs and both were purchased with cash. No loans.

3 cars, 2 drivers.  2011 Acura sedan, 2015 Acura CUV, and 2003 Honda convertible.  The Honda is a fair weather only car, driven in the summer.  I bought it when I was single, paid it off long ago, and it costs me very little to keep it.  I love it and it's my hobby.  The 2015 CUV is the only one with a payment, at 0.9%, put about 25% down.

DINK household so 2 drivers, no kids.  One car.

2015 Mazda CX-5

New it was £30k (but we didn't buy it new)
8 weeks ago we paid £18k approved used from a dealer.

We had the last car for 5 years, I'm hoping to get a lot longer out of this one.

Two drivers.

Until very recently:
1999 Chevy Metro - 182,xxx (bought for $1000 in 2014 with 146k)
1992 Buick Roadmaster Wagon - 200,775 (bought for $700 in 2014 with 158k)

The Metro died in May, and then the Buick died last week.

Currently have zero cars and two drivers.  Luckily we can make this work short-term.

Replacement small car will probably be either an 04-07 Scion xA or 09-10 Hyundai Accent hatchback (maybe Fit or Yaris if we can score a deal).
Replacement big car will probably be a 2000 Chevy Express van from a friend.

Two drivers and two cars - both paid with cash

2001 Chevy Cavalier @ 203,350 miles
2009 VW Jetta @ 44,000 miles

I am hoping that the Cavalier will survive for another 8-12 months so that I can build up enough cash for the replacement. I drive less than 10 miles per day Mon-Fri and if we go anywhere on the weekends is it in the VW.

Also DINKS here, with a car for each of us:

Honda Accord, 11 years old, somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 miles, bought new long before he met me
BMW X3, 9 years old, 146,000 miles, bought when it was 4 years old before I discovered MMM

BUT!!

I'm in the process of buying a used Honda Fit this week. I can feel my mustache growing. Or whatever the female equivalent is. (Why now? Feels a little weird because I kept my last car for 10 years and intended to do the same with this one. But I've started to feel like I'm throwing good money after bad. Yet another thing malfunctioned on the X3, and I'm tired of giving my money to BMW. I've also started driving to work again, rather than flying, so I'm looking forward to saving on gas.)

1 car - 2011 Chevy Traverse 80K miles paid 12K cash.

2 adults, 2 kids, dog, cat. Needed the third row for taking an extra kid (niese/nephew) or dog around with row folded down or we'd still have our 2009 Hyundai Sonata. We Bike or Run to wherever the car may be if someone else needs it.

2 drivers, 1 car (2007 Fit)

We bought the fit used from my in laws, who almost never drove it. So in 2012 it had 32K miles on it, and we paid 11,700 (blue book value). Now Fitsy is almost 10 and has 90K miles. I love it, it's perfect for our needs, and I would like to drive it until it won't go any farther.

::steels self for face punches from all directions::

We have 2 drivers and 8 vehicles.

Toy cars that serve no purpose and mostly just sit around depreciating:
1963 Ford Galaxie, 1974 Dodge Monaco, 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser.

Cars that are driven regularly but still mostly unnecessary:
1991 Ford Crown Vic, 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2003 Mercury Marauder, 2008 Ford Escape.

Actual useful work vehicle:
1993 Ford F-350

In my defense, they're paid for and self-maintained, so the cost is still below what the average family in my neighborhood pays to "own" a vehicle for each driver. We sold two in the last year- it WAS ten.

Am I officially banned from the forummm now?

We have 2 cars but are about to get a 3rd for my daughter who recently turned 16 (I know, the opposite of what we should be doing).

I drive a 2007 Nissan Frontier with 70,000 miles (paid off years ago)

My wife drives a 2011 Honda Pilot  with 60,000 miles (which is funny since one of the early MMM articles talks about how stupid and crazy it would be to drive a 2011 Honda Pilot), also paid off a while ago

About to buy a used car for my daughter in the $8k range, which will be paid for cash and the car will get at least 35 mpg and will be used to get her through her last year of high school and through college

2 Drivers 2 cars + one RV.

2015 VW Golf TDI (paid cash) 17K miles.  My DW needs a decent car for her work.  She drives clients around in it.  <9K miles per year.  >40 mpg in town.

2000 Dodge Caravan 142K miles.  This van is worth more to us than its value.  It is extremely useful to have a larger vehicle to haul large work and personal items like furniture.  <1K miles per year on average.

2003 Class B RV (Chevy 3500 chassis)  92K miles. We got this about 2 months ago for cash as a FIRE incentive.  We intend to try slow travel around North America in early FIRE.  Not much invested and we can get most of it back if RV life is not for us.

We drive whichever vehicle is appropriate for the occasion.  The Golf gets the most use because it is the most economical but overall we do not drive much.

Side note.  The Golf is part of the VW scandal.  As a result we have the option of selling it back to VW for more than we spent on it or keeping it and pocketing about $7K cash.  We love the car but the buy back offer may be too good to refuse.

03 Lexus RX300 177k
03 Toyota Camry 167k

2 drivers. Both run well and I hope to take both of them to 250k. At our annual mileage rate that's about 10 years. Not too shabby.

3 but trying to get down to 1.
1970 Chevy pickup (selling)
2001 Lexus IS300 125k miles I bought from neighbor for $2k because I wanted air conditioning for my commute-got sick of sweating to death
97 Prius 150k miles (wife's car that she drives daily as a SAH mom and we take on road trips)

My employer is moving into a new building in a few months that is 1 mile from our house, so I plan on selling everything but the Prius and either walking or biking to work. When I was single I had 5 cars at one time so this will be a huge change for me haha.

2 cars for 2 drivers + 2 kids

2009 Honda Civic - 8 years old with 80k miles. I did buy this car new, and plan to keep it forever unless used Leaf prices get even more silly. I drive very little after a recent relocation.

2007 Ford Fusion - 130k miles. My wife bought this car new before our relationship. Spotty maintenance record, but it still runs fairly well. My wife really wants an SUV, so instead, we are keeping this car as long as possible. Not even my wife likes car payments.

1 company car which we are allowed to use as much as we want in our free time. It is anew Skoda, but even the gas is paid for. Inhatebdriving, so usually use public transport. My partner needs the car for work.

We have 4 cars currently.  I drive a 2004 Ford Ranger and the wife drives a 2005 Honda Accord.

The other two vehicles are projects/flip jobs.  The first is another Ford Ranger, a 2003, that I bought for $500 due to an angry girlfriend starting the interior on fire.  I completely replaced the cab of the truck and expect to sell it next month for $3500-$4000.  The other is a 1974 Datsun 260Z that I am doing a full restoration on.

Two drivers, three vehicles.
I drive a 2016 Silverado crew cab 4x4
Wife drives a 2014 Subaru Outback
We have a 2003 Mustang GT convertible with very low miles that is just a fun car for nice summer days.

We are FI empty nesters and feel no guilt paying cash and swapping our primary vehicles every few years.

2 Drivers 2 Cars:

Me: 2006  Honda Civic
Wife: 2009 Toyota Prius (Formerly and recently 2002 Toyota 4Runner).

Kept an eye out for 10 months for a Prius and finally found a good used one with low miles (50K) for under 10 grand. Wife tripled her gas mileage.

Three, for two drivers:
  • 1990 Mazda Miata (90K miles) -- my "daily driver," although I usually commute on a bicycle. Also used for autocross.
  • 1996 Ford Ranger 4-cylinder 4x4 (221K miles) -- my wife's daily driver
  • 1998 VW Beetle TDI (~200K miles, I think) -- project car, not currently running (but I really need to finally fix it so my wife can get 45 MPG instead of <20 MPG in the truck!)
Each of the cars was bought used for less than $5,000.

Formerly 2 cars:
2003 Hyundai Sonata V6 (bought cash in 2011 for $3,000)
2004 Hyundai Sonata regular engine (bought cash in 2013 for $3,800).

Now down to just the 2004 Sonata. Only 70,000 kilometers on it :)

Just 1 car for 2 drivers. A 2010 Toyota Prius that we bought 1 year ago and paid cash for it. We didn't have another car at the time since we moved back to the US from Japan.

We used to have 2 cars for 2 drivers, but when we moved to Japan 4 years ago, we couldn't take our cars with us. It's expensive to own a car in Japan because of all of the taxes and such so we decided to just go with 1 car. We've been a 1 car household ever since. We'll never go down to 0 cars, because this is the US, land of poor public transportation infrastructure, and we want the freedom to take roadtrips.

1 car for 2 drivers, 2 kids

2013 Plug-in Prius, 30K miles - we bought it about a year ago from a friend whose lease on it had run out for just over $20K.  Could have bought it in cash, but got a very low interest rate (~3%, I think) from our credit union, so we financed.  Very, very fuel efficient--especially given that we can charge it from the solar panels on our roof for free!

On the rare occasions I have to drive for work, I use Zipcar.

That is awesome! I'll give you a small jab for the 2008 Ford Escape (and maybe another for having a Crown Vic and a Marauder when one Panther ought to be enough for anyone), but otherwise I take less exception to your eight cars than I do to (for example) Chris22's newish Acuras.

1995 VW Cabrio 5 speed - Original owner 52k, I use this as my daily driver as soon as the snow melts. Never seen salt stored in winter.

Oops forgot to add I'm retired army empty nester only me do what I want

2 drivers, 3 kids, 2 cars.

My car: 2007 Toyota Prius, 177K miles, purchased in 2010 with 39K miles for $15,000
My wife's care: 2012 Mazda 5, 45K miles, purchased in 2016 for $12,000

We went a couple of years as a single-car family, but when our third son was about three months old, my wife begged for a bigger car. Fitting three in the back of a Prius can be done, but it's a hassle. We decided to keep the Prius because it's not even worth getting rid of. It has significant body damage from a hail storm and two wildlife collisions - not worth more than a couple thousand bucks. But it runs like a champ.

One Toyota Highlander for 1 person, puppy and crate, large harp, three grandchildren (two boosters, one carseat.) Purchased almost five years ago for cash on the barrelhead when the vehicle also needed to transport another adult with wheelchair, walker, and frequent luggage. Plan to simply keep it maintained and drive it forever. No clown car comments or face punches please. I can fit my harp, my dog, and my and his luggage in there, and I'm not downsizing. I keep the mileage  low, and only fill up twice a month. (Purchased a 2012 model in October 2011. Current mileage is slightly over 31,000.)

2 drivers, 2 cars.

Me: 2005 Ford Escape. We bought it in 2009 for $11k with 36,000 miles on it. Even after having it as our only car for a year and a half, it still only has 95,000 miles. I love this car and hope it lasts forever, even if it only does get 19 mpg. The back seats fold down flat for hauling the dogs around or camping or getting rid of yard debris. And, like my previous used Ford, it's been SUPER cheap to own. In 7 years it's only needed brakes, tires, and fixing a small leak in the exhaust.

Husband: 2006 Toyota Avalon. Bought in 2014 for $8500 with 130,000 miles. Stupid, stupid, stupid purchase. Husband was super into the leather and the seat warmers and I was done car shopping. We didn't have it looked at, and it's been in a pretty bad accident. A lot of minor electrical stuff is failing. Husband was hit by an uninsured driver last year and now the bumper is cracked. BUT it runs like a champ and my husband loves it. So I told him we're not putting any money into anything other than keeping the engine running and when that stops, it's off to the junk yard as a valuable life lesson.

2 drivers, 3 vehicles:

1999 Nissan Sentra that has needed to be sold for awhile but I procrastinate these things. Purchased in 2001 after previous vehicle was totaled while parked. I think I financed it for a month until I got the insurance $ for the totaled car. Mileage= ~175K, mid-30mpg so not too bad. From a recent perusal on Craigslist, I'll get between $800-2500 for it. Ha ha. I'm trying to motivate myself by promising to use a portion to get a nice commuter bike.

2009 Honda Fit purchased after DH's 1993 Saturn SL-1 got too wobbly to drive. We hit a semi-truck on I-40 with that baby in 2008, and although it was still driveable, it developed an alarming shimmy as well as shedding little bits of the carbon body now and then. This was when we were moving to Phoenix anyway so we just donated the Saturn and drove the Fit to AZ. It was a *great* city car and since we went for the sport model with shifter paddles, it is great for the dry, paved mountain roads around here too. This is the only vehicle I've purchased new.

2000 Toyota 4Runner purchased after the Fit got an ouchy in its transmission box, on the road to Mount of the Holy Cross. It was supposed to be passenger car accessible, but the Fit's pretty low-slung and multi-thousands of dollars later, we had a new transmission. We decided on something that could take gnarly roads to get to trailheads, or the occasional nasty blizzard. A friend was offloading it, for less than the Fit's transmission box. It's got ~200K, a bunch of brewery stickers, and we call it The Dragon.

2 drivers, soon to be 3.
2001 VW Passat: DW's car, bought in 2012 for $1500 and 107k miles now has 147K. Starting to have multiple issues but I do my own work.
1994 Geo Metro: My car, bought in 2010 for $1000 and 47k miles now has 101k. I drive this car like I stole it and still get 46+mpg.
1991 Chevy 1500 truck: bought in 2014 for $3500 and 70k miles now has 76k. Use it for camping, craigslist finds and Lowes runs.

2 drivers in my house, we each have one vehicle.

I purchased my Tacoma in 2009 new for cash (~$24,000), it has 105,000 miles on it right now and I plan to push it well past 200,000. Not sure on mileage but I'd guess I get 20-24mpg on average with a light foot.

The other car is a Subaru Forester that was purchased new in 2015 with a 1.9% auto loan from Navy Federal Credit Union (~$29,000), it has about 30,000 miles on it now. Its new and fancy, has a CVT with a lifetime warranty, and I usually get about 33mpg in it.

I work at a heavy industrial site and need to get to work rain/hail/ice/snow/hurricane no matter what as a matter of public safety. My SO is a school bus driver who gets up at 4-5am before the schools even call snow days and drives to work in some pretty tough conditions.

I'd love to have a little Honda Fit to drive while the weather is cooperating, but for now I'll just continue to keep my truck in good condition and avoid taking it on long trips when I can. I'd like to keep the truck for at least another 8 years, hopefully by then I will have the option to purchase an all electric 4X4.

2009 VW Jetta @ 44,000 miles

Are you one of the VW drivers due a compensation payment then?

Unfortunately not, only the TDI models in 2009 fall under this.

I have a face punch worthy 4 vehicles for 2 drivers. I can't get my wife on board to reduce the number of vehicles plus we due have recreation stuff too. One day we will definitely get better. The good part is that we haven't financed a vehicle in years and the last one we did was at 0% interest.

2007 Toyota Corolla (my daily driver) bought new at big discount. Has under 60K miles on it
2007 Ford Escape (my wife's daily driver) bought used paid cash. Has under 70K miles on it
2002 Chevy HD2500 used for hauling stuff and pulling our travel trailer. Bought used for dirt cheap as it needed some work. Only has ~120K miles on it
2013 Can Am Spyder (a needless toy) we plan to use this a lot more after FIRE. ~6K miles on it

2 drivers + 2 car seat kids = 1 2008 Honda Fit.

DH bikes to work. I work from home. He used to bike to pick up our older daughter if I had to drive for work, but the baby is too young to ride in the bike trailer. On the rare occasion we need 2 cars, I rent from Enterprise for about $40/day which is usually reimbursed by my company. I figured out I would need to drive about 9 days per month for renting to be more expensive (payment, insurance, maintenance, paying for another parking spot, etc).

Right now, at this moment, we have 2 cars and 2 drivers (ETA we also have two kids, aged 4 and 8), hence the vehicle upsize.

Car 1: 2005 Toyota Matrix, 310 000 km - bought used, paid cash (back in 2008).  This has been our family car for the last 8 years.  It's been great, but is nearing the end of its reliable life.  It hasn't died yet or had an atrociously expensive repair, so we're mulling over what to do with it.  The odometer is busted so it would need a $300 fix to pass a safety and be sold.

Car 2: 2016 Mazda CX-5, 1000km.  Bought new, paid for half in cash and am currently paying off the rest as quickly as humanly possible.  This will be our vehicle for the next decade, at least.

I don't think we need two cars as I am happy to take public transit and incorporate walking/cycling into my commute.  We just aren't really sure what to do with the Matrix.  So right now, DH is taking it to hockey (no stinky hockey bags in my pretty new car!), using it for Home Depot runs, and we're using it for some errands.  But it's extremely rare we need two vehicles at once.  So we may sell the Matrix, or just hold onto it until it has a repair that is too pricey to justify.  At this point, the newish sets of tires are worth more than the car is!

The real argument against keeping it is the insurance cost - I'm a new driver so I'm expensive to insure; having two vehicles means I have to be listed as primary driver on one, even though I really don't drive very often. The additional monthly insurance cost is significant.  At this point, we've only had the Mazda for 2 weeks so we are still considering our options.

3 adults in household, one driver, one car. Subaru Impreza, bought new, paid cash.

We also own the car that our college aged dd drives. Kia Rio, bought new, paid cash.

Over the years, we have not had great experiences with used cars, and my dh hates messing with car stuff, and doesn't really want to spend time on it, so I'd rather buy a new car and maintain it well and drive it until it gives up the ghost.

4 - all 4WD jeep cherokees classic model, all with over 200K, my daily driver has 307K and my husbands has 325K.  We have been trying to sell two of them and hope they will be gone soon.  We need 4WD for my wildlife consulting business.  We are on dirt roads everyday.  They stopped making the model jeep cherokee we like about 15 years ago....can't figure out what to get now as I don't like the new ones and they aren't built as tough.

2 adults, 2 young kids.

Subie outback-Family hauler, camping rig, snowboard transporter and adventuremobile.
Honda Fit-Commuter for my wife and me when I don't ride my bike.

I've kicked around going 1 car but the convenience tradeoff is too steep for us. They're paid for and operating costs are very low compared to income.
