Right now, at this moment, we have 2 cars and 2 drivers (ETA we also have two kids, aged 4 and 8), hence the vehicle upsize.
Car 1: 2005 Toyota Matrix, 310 000 km - bought used, paid cash (back in 2008). This has been our family car for the last 8 years. It's been great, but is nearing the end of its reliable life. It hasn't died yet or had an atrociously expensive repair, so we're mulling over what to do with it. The odometer is busted so it would need a $300 fix to pass a safety and be sold.
Car 2: 2016 Mazda CX-5, 1000km. Bought new, paid for half in cash and am currently paying off the rest as quickly as humanly possible. This will be our vehicle for the next decade, at least.
I don't think we need two cars as I am happy to take public transit and incorporate walking/cycling into my commute. We just aren't really sure what to do with the Matrix. So right now, DH is taking it to hockey (no stinky hockey bags in my pretty new car!), using it for Home Depot runs, and we're using it for some errands. But it's extremely rare we need two vehicles at once. So we may sell the Matrix, or just hold onto it until it has a repair that is too pricey to justify. At this point, the newish sets of tires are worth more than the car is!
The real argument against keeping it is the insurance cost - I'm a new driver so I'm expensive to insure; having two vehicles means I have to be listed as primary driver on one, even though I really don't drive very often. The additional monthly insurance cost is significant. At this point, we've only had the Mazda for 2 weeks so we are still considering our options.
